Ive got my pc grow box setup minus the lighting. I already have in my possession 400w HPS and 400w MH with their own ballasts and reflectors. My question is about whether to use HPS or MH or CFL's in my case. If i were to put in HPS and just dim it, would the heat production scale down along with the light ? Or am i better off just using the cfls?

do you really mean to put a 400w his in a pc tower? how big is that tower? That is WAY TO HUGE for such a small space, a 400w could cover 3'x3' grow space adequately... With a pc case i would use cfl or if able to afford i would get a small either 50w or 90w ufo led..... got to research the leds as theirs tons out there... best of luck brother

a dimmed hps might be an option, more efficient(less heat per light output) than cfl or mh. ive a huge 3ft tall 1ft wide tower at home though so maybe his is basically a server rack grow room.
what does your ballast dim to?

might be an idea to get a cooltube if youre going with anything close to that wattage
regardless get a good fan, better airflow will open up more possibilities and lead to happier fatter plants.

Bgrt,
My dimensions arent far off of that. I guess the only way to check this is to try it out and check the temps.
Also, i done a search on here for auto assassin grows. To my knowledge there hasnt been any PC grows of that strain. Looking forward to documenting the whole grow and sharing with you guys. Anyone grown the assassin with any advice?

yeh if you have the time give it a shot cooltube and a strong extraction fan might work but depends on how dimmed it has to end up and if its worth it. ive seen people grow with 70w hps in pc towers and stuff it just depends how much it can take before its a furnace. the cooltube would help let plants get closer and cut down a good bit of the heat.
if if has to be dimmed very very low then cfl might end up a better choice efficiency wise but since you have everything id give it a go. if you set it up empty plan for it to get hotter when the space is filled with plants and has less air to circulate etc.
if its long enough t5s might be a good idea ive got a bunch of 2 foot single bulb fixtures but maybe you could find something that fits in the top of the case. theyre better than standard cfls im pretty sure and they stay cool with a fan blowing on them you can have plants very close.

My advice, in a pc tower, use CFL or LED. I have 4 ladies in a 4' x 4' area with a 400 HPS.
