hello fellow afn members i am looking to order my soil and nutrients today i will be going with fox farm soil trio and al purpose promix soil my question is is there anything i need to add to the promix for soil to be good from seed to harvest i saw a couple of grows say they used promix and added either worm casting, cow manure or chicken poo please and advice welcome ordering today

so the promix soil is a 9lb bag any advice on how much worm casting might be needed to mix
the whole bag thinking about 1lb of warm casting is that to much or to little to mix with the 9lb bag
of promix

I think that would be fine. You could also add some perlite maybe four cups should be enough.

Typically folks mix about 40% of their total soil/soilless mix to be worm castings. ProMix has some macro and micos in it. None of them have any effect on the mycos though. I'd actually say that 1lb of worm castings is not enough to add to a 9lb bag of Pro Mix. I'd get at least 3-5lbs to get the correct benefit of the environment. As well namvet is spot on that your drainage is going to go to shit and you need to add some additional perlite - hydroton would be great if you have it.

thanks for the quick reply had to go and get my wake and bake on :toke: but thanks namvet25 and whatsgoodie2 and this is my first grow so what are hydroton are you referring to the red rock pebbles like used in hydro grows did not know i could add that to soil

Yes, hydroton are the pebbles - you can get them relatively cheap and don't need a ton. Their primary purpose is hydro but they're great for drainage too. Think of them as a more accessible super chunky perlite. ProMix is loaded with wicking agents like perlite, peat, vermiculite, etc. Hydroton has minor wicking properties as well as great ability to add to the drainage system. Remember a good drainage/aerated root system will treat you well!

Don't need much hydroton. Probably a pound or two, just to mix in and create spaces for the water to drain better in your pots. Which ProMix are you using by the way, could you link it possibly? Have you ordered your FoxFarm nutes yet?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/200797626679?hlp=false&var= - 2lb of hydroton, <$10.

Yeah that's one of the cheaper Pro Mix's but all of the stuff I find says it's pretty much the same, peat, vermiculite, perlite and some macro nutrients and mycos. Worm castings would work perfect with some hydroton to give you a nice soil mix. Did you order your FF stuff yet?

thanks for all the great info whatsgoodie2 i have not ordered the nutes yet but i am getting ready to :booya:

I'm sending you a PM. Don't order yet!
