Hello! I understand PPM and how it affects plants and its ability to utilize available nutrients, but I am unsure where PPM should be and how to raise/lower it.

What is the desired PPM for a DWC 5-gallon bucket with nutes for one plant?

Do hydro nutes usually tell you on the label how they affect PPM?

What is a good & cheap PPM meter?

Are there any threads that I can read that explain all of this? Thanks!

That questions is kind of a double edge sword...1) If its good its not cheap..2) If its cheap its not good...imho

Try the Hydro thread,I cant really speak on it as I'm still trying to get a handle on it myself and dont want to lead you wrong
Someone with more knowledg than I will jump in Im sure

:peace:

There are a ton of threads that talk about this, you just have to take the time to search for them. And its kinda hard to explain this to you with such little information. What nutes are you using? What nute schedule are you using? So forth and so on. When you're asking for some help with something please give us as much information as you can so that we can help you better.

Typically you would start with something between 250-500 ppm & work up from there .. about 100 ppm at a time (each week or res change) Once they start to drink/feed a lot you can tell how much they need by weather the ppm & PH goes up or down as the nute levels drop:peace:

& yeah.. no such thing as a good ,cheap meter !

I found this a while ago on this site, not sure who originally posted it or what thread it came from but maybe it could start you on the right track. And my Bluelab Ph meter has never let me down.

I'm actually working on a PPM/EC/TDS thread that should be ready sometime this evening or tomorrow afternoon. It'll be using the chart Viracocha noted up above for the conversion. :)

PPM is a good way to give you a ball park nutrient strength really, there's more important things.. in order; temp -> ph -> ppm/tds/ec.
