Grow Mediums How do you control size of a plant in a hydro setup ?

I'm looking into trying a hydro setup, a lot of the buckets i see are huge.

How do you control plant height in hydro? My cab is only 4feet high leaving 3 feet for the rest due to filter and lamp.

Can you get smaller buckets so as to limit root mass and therefore plant max height ?

Grow low ryders. It all depends on genetics. I'm running 3.5 gallon buckets that are shorter then the 5 gallon buckets and I'm growing 2 types of plants, one 60 day wonder with max height of 90cm and a super skunk that's 120cm and growing despite DWC bucket size.

I've seen 2 gallon buckets with lids, but even that may not do more than having you fill the bucket 2 or 3 times a day, in flower lol. I'm willing to bet most strains will fill a 2 gallon bucket to packed full of roots! I tried growing northern lights in 2" net pots, the root mass just eventually busts the pot! The only thing I can think of is for you to grow something like Betty Boo or A Little Kushy. Hmmm, maybe Ill test my 2 gallon bucket just for giggles!

Difficult for sure. That's one of the caveat's of hydro, huge plants in small containers... Like smeghead said, it's all in the genetics.

I grow DWC. I find that it depends on the size of your bucket and how much water it can hold and how much your roots can spread out freely... also depends on your air stone coverage. Small bucket, small airstone, small plant... IMO.

I agree totally. I reverse females for breeding fems in an Aerogarden. By the end of the grow I am so happy to see pollen because that 1 gallon rez gets sucked up so fast that it becomes a chore to have to keep refilling and ph'ing all the time If I had more room I would just grow in a regular bucket... Can't chop her fast enough LOL

Asked around about growing plants in small pots in soil to intentionally keep on the small side but have been told repeatedly that this just causes stress to the plant, which we all know is not a good thing where breeding is concerned!

Steelrat if I were you I would look into LST in hydro buckets. I have not been able to find a perfect fit for my Aerogarden but have managed so far with duct tape and pipe cleaners. Not very professional but for a hobby it gets me by. I have seen some threads with buckets that this has been done quite well with however. If I remember correctly the buckets had holes drilled into the edge lip and somehow the plants were tied down with these. Just a thought, it would certainly control your height for sure.

Have you considered NFT rather than bucket grows? The assembled kit is only around 8" tall and results are astounding!

i use 0.8 gal bucket with average of 80 - 96 g dried bud (LST and supercropping keep the girls short)

Do you have any pics of your setup?? I'm really getting into the LST thing, seems more logical than letting them grow straight up!
