New Grower How much electricity is considered too much?

led is better because that 250w led is the same as say a 600w hps :-)

a 250w LED is really only pulling about 150 W or electricity. You can find out what base usage is from the power company. It is basically the amount of electricity a house is allowed to use before it starts jumping into different cost categories. Unless you are multiple times base usage the power company will not even blink. As long as you are paying your bill they are not trying to cut off their best customers. It only becomes an issue if the powers that be start noticing or get complaints about other things, then they check power usage.

I'm not quite sure how that works exactly, is it something to do with energy efficiency? Just wondering why it's called a 250w light if it uses 150w of electricity

How much would be good for a 60cm (2ft) x 60cm (2ft) x 160cm (5.2ft) without being overkill?

That's my grow space :smokeit:
Perhaps a 400/500/600w LED and ditch the HPS?

my kitchen chandalier has 6 100w bulbs in it. my coffee pot and microwave are 1000w each(not 24/7) but I'm sure a/c units are 2-3000 watts a piece and run 24/7 in summer
edit...also one of those little ceramic room heaters runs 1500w

I had a friend who worked for Detroit Edison. What he told me they look for a greater than 95% change in monthly usage. I think he said they average the past twelve months for the base. If you are worried about the authorities they would have to get a warrant and ask the power company for your records. I am not a lawyer so if anyone knows how the cops can look at your usage data chime in please.

They don't need a warrant, the companies freely give them the information in the US.

They just mean it's comparable to that wattage, even though it draws less power. The real answer is marketing... but it's true since leds are more efficient at producing light... but yeah confusing.
