hi guys and gals I just got access to a nice cosy attic space that i would like to convert into a clandestine green room! Its a tight space height wise about 110cm high but lots of width and depth to work with . Wont fit a tent in there though. Thinking of building some sort of grow box. And running an LED light system. All in the very early stages of planning now. Just want one plant initially to start out.

Budget is low and stealth is paramount I don't want my mother in law wondering what that aroma is when she comes to visit!

Suggestions and any advice would be more than welcome.
thank you

Welcome to the family, Bilbo! :tiphat:
110cm is tight, but doable. Remember to take into account your container height and light depth. Sounds like you may be wanting to invest in a carbon filter as well.
Check out the search feature in the upper right corner of the page. Start checking out micro grows, stealth grows, etc.
And don't be afraid to ask questions!
What strains are you looking at right now?

Welcome To the family "Grow & Show.." im sure you can make it work a little LST ,build your box get your air flow and temps in check make it happen...:five:

Welcome to the FAM!!
I'm sure you are at the right place.....You should for sure research your strain with that limited height, and invest in a carbon filter.
I'm just a newb myself but I do wish you the best of Growing!!!!!!!!!:smokebuds::styles rasta:

Afternoon Bilbo, Welcome mate! Best of luck with your project :peace:

Hello Bilbo B

Glad to have you on board, lots of master's of the grow here on this site. Try not to let advice overwhelm ya, but you will get what you need here for sure.

when planning your grow, you have a couple of things to consider. Since you are in an attic, will heat over the warmer months be an issue, or is the temperature going to be regulated? That would be my first step. Like mentioned above, an extraction fan with a carbon filter will help with the smell.

Maybe you could start a journal, in the new grower's section, and we can go into some depth. You can start one even if you are still in the planning stage, that could help other new growers who have the same questions that you do.

My two cents, and glad you stopped in to see.

bye for now

Peace

Hey there Bilbo. Welcome. I'm very new here too but I've been growing auto's for about 18 months.

I'm an attic grower too. The biggest issue is maintaining a reasonable temp. Easier in winter than in summer. At least in winter you can insulate and even add heat, I use a small 60w tube heater. Right now I'm only getting a 10-15 degree difference between lights on and off.

Summer is a bitch though, the insulation designed to stop heat loss in winter also stops the house getting too hot in summer - I've had ambient temps in the attic of 105 - it then gets more difficult to control the odour, cause if you have to open the tent or box or whatever the filter isn't going to be as effective. Air con is gonna push up your costs and then it may not be financially viable. Then there's keeping them moist.... I still got a couple of crops last summer mind you so it can certainly be done. I use a 400w HPS. FL's and LED's will obviously generate less heat.

Have you seen the 7 Dwarfs? I've not grown them personally but I've heard thier ok, they only get to 12" but can still yeild an ounce or above per plant (allegedly).

You could always go down the supercropping and LST route. I supercrop and LST my babies. Gets the growing tips and main cola all at the same level and reduces the height of the subject plant. Good in situations where you don't have a lot of headroom. Plenty of info out there on the web regarding the two techniques. I have found that with auto's you can overdo the Low Stress Training - at least in my experience. I grow Easy and Low Ryders and I try to get all the training done in two weeks from the beginning of week 3. Other stains will differ I suppose. I've found that if I keep tying branches down I end up with plants that are putting a lot of energy into reaching the light rather than budding and the nodes are a bit far apart. But as I say, that's the Ryders and there are more experienced auto growers here than me.

I'm in Scotland just north of Edinburgh so we will be experiencing a reasonably similar climate I would think.

Best o luck.

Welcome Welcome! You are in good hands here. Im new myself, and I have yet to find a better MJ forum.

With the budget being low, I almost wanna tell you to go with CFL. I dont know much about LEDgrows, but I DO know that here in the US, led's are expensive. and you can do great things with CFL,. AND they're cheap to buy AND run. I myself am on my first grow with CFL about 5 weeks into flower.

As for the smell, get an air filter/purifier...preferably an ionic one (the negative ions are supposed to help with growth).
The way the closet my mini garden is set up- the door is wide open but there is a double layered light proof tarp velcroed (?) and duct taped to the door frame and the floor and at the bottom corner of the tarp, we cut a rectangle just big enough for the air filter, which acts as part of the exhaust system. it sucks in fresh air from the outside room, and blows it into the room. There is another fan- just a plain old window fan, blowing from the far corner of the closet and an exit for the hot air at the opposite top corner of the tarp.

You cant smell weed anywhere in the house, until you walk into the room with the closet. then it smells faintly like someone had smoked a bowl up there recently. Once you undo the velcro and go IN to the closet, fuh-gedda-bout it.

I hope everything works out for you and Good Luck!!:d5:
