Just building my first micro grow and need some advice with bulbs.....

Do I get 2x30w cfl rted at 1700 lumens each

or

1 46w cfl rated at 3750 lumens

??????

Cheers people, Keep on :Cool::peace:

small ones can be kept extreamly close and surounding the plant covering more area

lumens drop rapidly after the first foot , depending on plant size id figure two closer bulbs would be better

id rather use 4 small bulbs though and completly suround it , ive done test seed plants with 5 13 watt cfls , 4 surounding and one above , they did just as well as the plants eventually grown in the hid flowering room

make sure the temp/color is proper , i buy 3000k for flowering and 6500k for veg when useing cfls , i get em at the dollar store too so thats sweet

peace :Cool:

Cheers for the input. My initial thoughts were more lumens more growth but I've been a HPS grower for a while and with them this stuff never really crossed my mind. I should prob mention my gro space is only 50cm high.

One other question I'm interested in is what kicks out more heat, lots of small bulbs or one big one??

Peace.

one big one

one of my veg rooms is all cfl , used to be the actual 200 watt horticultural cfls X 3 , im now running ,,,, geeze i dont even know how many lol , a bunch of small ones equaling more watts and the room is cooler by a few degrees

I think it will boil down to the concentration of heat output. I have no idea what the equation would be but several small lights give out heat over a larger area compared to one or two. Heat out put x number of bulbs / square feet or surface area or something. There is also the ballast. I don't know if bigger bulbs mean more heat.b0b b1tch1n is an example multiple bulb raise temps less.

I've had a good look around and I'm surprised no one has done any research into the heat emitted by various CFLs. If i get paid today I may go to my local lighting shop and get a bag of bulbs to experiment. If I do I'll be sure to post my results

more smaller cfl's, is best in my opinion. because you have more flexibility in the placement of the light. i clamp my cfl's directly to the pot , when they are small DSC_0609.jpg like this. and hang them from the chord like thisDSC_0367.jpgwhen they get larger.:D: i also use 2700 kelvin for veg and 6500 kelvin for flower.

exactly the reason i switched from 3 giant cfls to a bunch of small ones
