Just wondering if anyone has used kelp or seaweed as a mulch layer ? Thoughts on it?

I haven't used it as mulch, but I have dug it in as compost. It rots away fairly readily, and I expect it adds lots of good micronutrients to soil. I'm not sure how risky the salt in it is, but I assume that there is a limit on how much is safe.

But what about salt? Is this a problem?
We have been using seaweed as mulch for many years and have not seen any adverse effect, such as a salt overload in the soil. In our region we have plentiful rain. If you are concerned about salt, seaweed can be spread out over the driveway and rinsed with a hose. Of course this is not an issue if you are using freshwater lake weed.

I've seen a lot of people using it on veggy gardens with mixed results. Don't know if the detractors are rinsing it first. Some have said it depends on the type of veggy.

well if it wild Kelp..lets face it,its going to be mixed overall. The sea is fkd up pretty good.Micro plastics in everything.and toxic stuff everywhere.so Id think it would depend on your region ad watershed health and all that.gonna take some real looking to be assured to get healthy kelp. Not certain its even possible today compared to a cpl decades ago.So ,unsure.Id not use it unless its fresh water kelp personally.Outdoors would be your better bet. id use that verses sea water kelp mulch for a small indoor run of pots.
