So I made up 6 gallons about to days ago and this morning I am down to about 2 gallons. It smells a little musty and I think it’s a little cloudy too. I’m running a good sized air pump and a 12” stone. I made the res up with advanced nutrients sensi ph perfect coco and canna rhizotonic. Is this reaction just the rhizotonic brewing? Thanks any input would be greatly appreciated

I would guess that the Rhizotonic, which is an algae extract, is fermenting, while the AN base nutes are mostly inorganic. Also, looking quickly at the Rhizotonic label, it does not mention reservoir use, and may be presuming it is fresh mixed as needed.

With that thought would you change the res or just give it a clean when it’s empty in two days? Thanks

This is not a scientific answer but musty-earthy smell is ok. It signals aerobic growth which for the most part are beneficials. It is when you get a sour-putrefied smell that you have problems. That signals anaerobic growth which is mostly detrimental. Something to think about is growth of solids (algae) that can foul irrigation lines? Otherwise just wait for the regular res change.

Thanks for the reply, I chickened out and dumped it yesterday. No more rhizo in the res from now on for me. The smell seemed to be getting worse like I could smell it a few feet away. When I dumped it, it was definitely slimy on the walls and bottom of the bucket. I’m sure that would have progressed to irrigation problems like you said or at very least complaints from the wife about the smell of our living room
