Very compelling debate. I'm torn now. I agree that reps are valuable to newcomers, whom I think benefit the most from observing reps. Sure, it's not perfect but, nothing is.

If I give advice to a newcomer, then someone with far more experience gives advice, I kinda back off and learn myself. I know who's who but for the newbie, I guess reps have merit. After all, this site is the absolute best, for first time growers looking for help.

Just the fact that SoH is asking our opinion is a true testament to the awesomeness of this site.

I voted to get rid of it,I like the badges they serve a purpose you can see what people have done from them but the rep is just a number other people give you.

Vote option [HASHTAG]#5[/HASHTAG] should be to just get rid of the "Ghost Points"
Its all recorded who got them and how..
I've started 3 times with a smile because it was no big thing and was fair to all.
When the Ghost points showed up it cheapened the whole concept.
I wasn't surprised when someone commented on the scam when it surfaced and it was said it would be fixed. It just never was.
There ARE some real 50,000+ folks here when you count the restarts, Their stars shined, and knowledge was shared over the years, not months. But we sure can't knock the enthusiastic contributions and great grows of the noobs who jumped in feet first and are definite assets. Hard Chargers all and deserving of a special badge,
I don't say take the points away as any punishment, It's just the fair thing to do.

Just an old watchers 2 pence.

Edit: I'm not suggesting a big witch hunt. Those that got them know who they are and where they should approximately be. A private PM to any mod may fix it and show the integrity we all know they have.

Slightly off topic but I will take this opportunity to voice my opinion on the like button. I'm not a fan of that either.
My biggest gripe about likes is that, let's say you are asking for help. You get 10 different answers. Then everyone likes every answer. How is the OP going to decide which course of action to take, when everyone "likes" every piece of advice. I personally try to like the comments I agree with. I will not "like" that you are sick...It reminds me of facebook

Hey let's turn this into a programmer's hell.

What if you did away with the rep system and instead instituted micro tipping. The tips would be purchased at the afn store at a discount of course. And then given out to members as the person who purchased them felt. Once you get a certain amount of tips you can run over to the afn store and buy something for free or reduced price.

You would never have any inflation because people would simply be paying to give you a tip. Or you could even buy your own

I don't actually know if there is a store, but what the heck that could be useful too.
