Grow Mediums Taking the DWC plunge

Day 3:

She's got a tap root touching the water reservoir. That didn't take as long as I thought it might.
Looks like the top-drip worked as intended. I'll probably let that continue until she's got a good root system in the bucket and then I'll turn it off.
I also leveled the Hydroton to the top of the net pot. Thanks @witchyhour!
I've got the recommended amount of Hydroguard in my reservoir, and that's it. I guess nutes start after 2 weeks, or maybe I'll just keep a close eye and see what she's needing? I'm on her like flies on rice! (I love malaphors)
So far this is fascinating. I only ever got to see what happens above the soil.

A tap root! Woot! Good stuff man. Thats one of the things im looking forward to when i try some dwc, seeing what the roots are doing.

That's awesome! Just wait until she starts looking yellow/light green to feed, and I'd give a first meal around 350 ppm, then keep around 450 ppm and slowly increase to 850/900 as it approaches blooming.

The first picture shows a plant starting to look like she's ready for her feeding, looking a little light in color. The second picture is the same plant a few days after feeding, no longer looking too light.

Here is day 5
She started looking a little light green so I added about 1ml of the trio per gallon of reservoir. This is 40% of the recommended dosage. She greened right up the next day.
Reservoir temp is at 75.4 f
pH is a constant struggle so far. I'm chasing it daily, but it does stay between 5.5 and 6.5.
I should be getting a TDS meter soon, so that might help with the upcoming veg.
I normally do a weekly update, if I remember, but I probably should do more since this is my first DWC grow.

She started looking a little light green so I added about 1ml of the trio per gallon of reservoir. This is 40% of the recommended dosage. She greened right up the next day.
Reservoir temp is at 75.4 f
pH is a constant struggle so far. I'm chasing it daily, but it does stay between 5.5 and 6.5.
I should be getting a TDS meter soon, so that might help with the upcoming veg.
I normally do a weekly update, if I remember, but I probably should do more since this is my first DWC grow.

Very nice! I would keep around that, no higher than 450 ppm, until she starts pre-flowering. Then increase like 100 at each feeding until you get to 850/950.

So, my TDS meter came today. That's exciting!
I took it out for a spin after checking it with calibration solution. It was pretty close; it read 1490 ppm in 1500 ppm NaCl solution.
I also did a reservoir change today because I had it running for a week to test it.

Here's some nummers:
My tap water: 32 ppm
My reservoir: 260 ppm

Plant is doing swell. I'll update when the lights come back on at ~8:00 PDT
I have my light go off during the hottest part of the day (3:30-7:30) in case that messes with your noggin.
Just remember, you can't teach an old dog to poop in the woods.

I love getting to test new gadgets! Out of curiosity, do you know if your tds meter uses the .7 or .5 calculation?
