What are cost-effective options to do photography in the range of say 1 to 10-12 inches, such as buds, colas? I want something better, more adaptable, than my iPhone.

I recall decades ago having a 35 mm film camera with swappable zoom macro lens that would do this. Are there appropriate swappable lenses for basic digital cameras that work well, such as I have a Canon pocket digital camera (likely 12 mb)? Or do I need to go with a 35 mm digital camera, with what kind of lens(es), how man megabytes?

A 4K monitor full screen is about 8 megapixels. Anything with more resolution is wasted online unless your lens requires to crop because it doesn't focus close enough.

I'm using a 12mp full frame Sony A7S that is 15 years old.

If your phone does macro, you can get some decent phone shots.

These are with OnePlus 12 phone.

When I break out the Sony is when I want to use the lens to add pleasing distortion. Similar to how certain orders of distortion make a guitar sound 'better'

Or when I want to show more detail that cell can.

Either way if you want to take a good close up the camera has to be rigid or you'll get blur because of the long shutter needed. I use a small tripod and a phone clamp. You must shut the fans to keep them from swaying the plant.

I also knock my exposure down 1-2 stops on the phone because the grow light causes overexposure. Alternately you can shut it and use flash or other fixed lighting. I've used a strong flashlight effectively at times.

The swirly images , need to try that with an oldschool zeiss biotar 75mm or the 58mm. Nice idea.
