So I've been researching a lot and have seen many different opinions on what lights to use for autos. I will be growing two royal dwarf autos to start out. Originally I was going to use two 42 watt CFLs 6500k lights to start, but then I read that hps lights were the way to go for autos and can yield more buds.. so I considered using A 75watt hps bulb. Not sure what HPS means either... Also can I use that same light for the whole grow or should I switch to 2700k when it starts to flower? Any input would be apreciated. Thanks!

Hey and Welcome!!
I am using both LED and CFL.
HPS stands for High Pressure Sodium. Most folks use at least 400 watt. The issue with these is heat, they generate quite a bit so you need to take cooling into consideration. The cost is in between LED and CFL but cooling can cost too. CFL generates only a mederate amount of heat and they work quite well and folks have some really nice grows with them. They can be relatively inexpensive LED is really quite nice, generate little heat and use less electricity, they do cost more up front though. Still, that cost is offset by long life. I would say, depending on your space 135 - 240 watt LED should do nicely.
Peace and happy growing!!

Great thank you much! I've read that with CFLs, you must keep the lights aprox. 2-3 inches away from the plant at all times. Would this be the same with LEDs? Also, are LEDs duel spectrum? I believe the expensive UFO ones are but not sure about smaller ones...

hey Strangecloud9 and welcome to AFN

you defiantly joined the correct website for all your growing needs. by far the best website!

currently i am using 400watt HPS in my 60x60x140cm grow tent, and i will say there is alot of heat coming of the HPS bulb. HPS bulbs also need a ballast that also gets hot. so i always have to have a couple of fans blowing. so just something to keep in mind when making your choice.

hope you have a a great grow when you start.
may the bud be with you

trustfullytasty
