Hey guys i know with autos you can start them under an HPS from day one but if your vegging a photoperiod under 24/0 lighting is the MH bulb better? i understand its made for vegative growth while the HPS is made for flower but the HPS bulb gives off much more lumens so what do you guys think im better off using?

Right now there at day 3 and have been under my 600w HPS but im wondering if i should screw in my MH bulb instead :dunno:

This is my first photoperiod grow so let me know what you think please :peace:

I have grown solely with HPS for a Long time...think decades.
With No problems at all.as a matter of fact I don't like MH at all.
I think they make for leggy thin looking plants.
No worries run it at 18/6 though, not 24/0.Why waste the electricity as they need rest.
They are not autos, they like to sleep.
good luck

wow thats interesting one of the main reasons i was thinking the MH would be better is because ive been reading a lot about how people have been getting less leggy plants with tighter nodes when vegging under a MH? Anyone else have any experience with vegging under mh vs. hps?

also i planned to run my lights at 18/6 but, im doing 24/0 because i read this in my grow bible...

is this true? or do the plants need a dark period to rest? :dunno:

I think they need the dark. Also, if you are running the HPS, they should have some time without all that heat beating down on them.

JMO

I am not sure about the MH, but, peeps have been doing it that way for a reason I guess.

Peace

Wassup eek would it be bad to switch to 18/6 if i have had them under 24/0 since day one?

I put in the MH last night so right now i got my 600w MH bulb like 2 feet above the pot and can maintain like 76-79 degrees :Sharing One:

heres what is says about 18/6..

kinda confusing this book recommends 24/0 for vegging but ive read a lot of people say the plant needs rest... this is my first photo grow so im a bit confused and whats best :dunno:

Is it possible to back it off. I am not so sure, I have have heard stories of peeps putting an 18/6 out in May and they start flowering, and May is not too much shorther than the real 18/6 which happens in June.

This early, I think it would be okay to back it off gradually to 20/4 but I am not solid on this.

I also see no problem, if you must, in keeping them at 24/0

Yeah, I am a bit wishy washy on this. Maybe some other's with photo experience can share with us.

Peace

the needing rest is B.S. , people need to look into different types of plants , some including cannabis do NOT need rest , it has been proven by professionals , but as everything in life , it takes time until things become known and properly told , we will have old timers still thinking the plants need rest , its not their fault they think that because for decades thats what we were told , but now that info has been debunked , yet some guy still tells another guy who tells another guy and we end up where we are now with people all over the internet claiming improper info as truth

those pics of the grow bible info are nice to see , but for those who still dont believe it , do a google search , dont necessarily look for the info from cannabis sites , get true info from horticulturalists/plant biologists instead , but be sure you are looking at info on specific plant types which include but are not limited to cannabis

peace

Can you tell me where in the world gets 24 hours of direct full intensity light?
I thought not..
we have a cyclical clock so do plants.. They evolved that way for millennia.
can they thrive under 24 hours? Sure they can.
Do you want to work 24 hours a Day?
i know I don't want and neither would I force something I love to either.
jahs blessings on those plants that you are overworking.
Most Sharks and Dolphins don't sleep and maybe whales, but Everything else does.
do what you see fit but after 30 years of growing I would never leave a light on for 24 hours a day, for Any plant.
give it a rest..its just what comes natural...
my opinion is based on my feelings for life being plant or animal.
just because something can do something doesn't mean it should.
ITAL is Vital.
a balance is needed in everything.
irie vibes don't come from stress but relaxation.
and yes I am an old timer. I have been planting seeds for three decades. Not a few years.
To answer you directly, 24 hours of light does not have a negative effect,
But like I said earlier do you want to work 24 hours?

You can't compare a plant to a human or give it a conscious.

It doesn't know, a Mayfly doesn't know its got 23 hours 59 minutes left to live. Its just hard wired to do its thing.

If it went for nap for a couple of hours it would miss a quarter of its life....lol (that bit is a joke obviously)

But to answer the OP

Use the MH for veg as I believe the nodes will be closer.

They run hotter than a hps though so be aware of that.

Who says I cannot?
most philosophers would disagree with you.as would most Hindu's.
your world is of your making.
may Jah bless you people who know it all.
maybe in my next life I too will be omniscient.
but sadly in this one I am a man of mostly Indian descent.
namaste my brothers.
but I am reticent to argue my beliefs this evening.
