Here are some of the most important steps i have learned from growing over the years.
1. ALWAYS sterilize the soil, This is an absolute must, this will take care of ALL your soil-borne diseases such as the dreaded fungus gnats. I even stopped having problems with leaf bugs as well, especially those rollie pollies. As long as your soil already contains nutrients it needs you do not need beneficial microbes to break it down further "this is a very slow process". As in hydroponics you do NOT need microbes to have a healthy plant if nutrients are already there or gradually added.
2. NEVER EVER transplant an auto
3. use large pots, 3-5 gallons
4. only water when absolutely necessary especially during vegetative growth, over watering dilutes nutrients and hinders root growth. Make the plant reach for the water
5. Always test the ph of your water source and runoff
