Here are some of the most important steps i have learned from growing over the years.

1. ALWAYS sterilize the soil, This is an absolute must, this will take care of ALL your soil-borne diseases such as the dreaded fungus gnats. I even stopped having problems with leaf bugs as well, especially those rollie pollies. As long as your soil already contains nutrients it needs you do not need beneficial microbes to break it down further "this is a very slow process". As in hydroponics you do NOT need microbes to have a healthy plant if nutrients are already there or gradually added.
2. NEVER EVER transplant an auto
3. use large pots, 3-5 gallons
4. only water when absolutely necessary especially during vegetative growth, over watering dilutes nutrients and hinders root growth. Make the plant reach for the water
5. Always test the ph of your water source and runoff

1- When you sterilize your soil you are also killing all beneficial microbial life. If bugs are an issue I would recommend mosquito dunks ( See pic below)

2- If you know how to properly trans plant there are no issues.. I will state that starting in containers smaller then 32oz has shown signs of stunting for me.

3- With auto most efficient would be 2 -3 gallons in my opinion (I have seen monsters in 1 gallon and under)

4- If you water by weight you'll never go wrong

Sheesh...

Old trick from a gardener and it works, plants have looked and grown beautifully everytime. Even your ole tap water kills the beneficial microbes. My soil is already jammed packed with the elements each plant needs to survive. For example, hydroponics if done right have none of the beneficial microbes its all fed nutrients right from the bottle that microbes have ALREADY broken down, same goes for my soil.
