Hi,

i'm running my first DWC, an AKR in a single bucket, LED light.

I pHd my nute mixture, PPM was590 which is 0.8 EC as my meter has a 0.7 conversion factor.

I went away for a day and ahve come back to a PPM of 2090! Which is an EC of 4.0.

My plant hasn't dropped roots yet so she isn't feeding from the bucket yet.

I double-checked my meter and it's spot on, reading 590 PPM (0.8 EC) for my tap water.

What on earth could make the PPM so high, too much oxygen or something ?

Any help greatly appreciated as i need to fix this before she drops roots so i don't know how long i have, this is day 7 for her.

btw the pH is stable at 6.

with tap water of 0.8 you better not use it for your DWC :S
way too high to make a balanced mix my friend.
Also do you have any kind of filter for your water? If not consider buy one RO one... it will save you time and money from buying bottle water for 3 months and it is the best for your plants, that eventually will cost you more :D

I have not heard of this, maybe someone else has. Whats your pre-nute ppm? did you ph your water before adding in the nutes? How long did you wait after adding the nutes before your tested for ppm? Your tap water alone was 590???? Sounds to me like thats some nasty water! You might want to get an inline filter and install it at the tap you use!

Your only fix right now is to water that mix down. For new plants I'd only put a few drops of nutes in. My first week with the roots into the bucket, I was only about 150 ppms above the water's base, so my ppms were about 300 with the water at 127 as a base. Also, might be a good idea to contact the manufacturer on this.

Hey bro, what water are you using? When making up the res add the nutes slowly one by one and give it time to be fully mixed into the water. I can't see why it would shoot up so much but I've made up a res too quickly before and the EC had risen a few points over night. Did you clean your clay pebbles? Sometimes they can cause a PH shift but not heard of them ffecting EC..
I'd say make up a fresh res to be safe if it's still unstable, give everything a good rinse..other than that not sure brother, sorry I can't be more help

:Sharing One:

Thanks all for replies :)

I'm using a carbon/chlorine filter on the water.

But i've just had a thought, on my filler tank, i put silicone rubber around the exit line and i've just read the instructions on the back and it says :

'not for use in aquariums'.

That must be the problem ?

That could be it bro, silicon usually raises PH as well though. Keep us updated.

Yup, looks like i've been bubbling industrial silicone through the water!

What a twit, lol ;+}

Will have to buy a proper seal or see if there's such a thing as aquarium-safe glue or whatever.

Will now do some EC tests before doing a proper nute mix.

Thanks again for advice :)

I would suppose thats could be a problem although I find it hard to believe that small amount would leach that much stuff into your water.

I thought on that myself. I drilled my holes mostly to be a snug fit on my hoses but a couple were a tad larger. I didn't bother to seal them and it caused no problem. I have since found out though, that you can get Uniseals down to 3/16" so next time I'll use Uniseals wherever any line passes into my res,

Thanks for that, found them on UK ebay, nice one :)

I've thoroughly washed everything and am now soaking the lot in phd water again.

One lesson learnt then ;+}

I need a hydro guru !

I thoroughly washed all the buckets, soaked everything in 6.0 water for four hours, filled a test bucket with 6L of water, pHd it to 6.0, waited an hour, added nutes.

It's now three hours later, pH is stable but PPM is 1640!!

The only thing the water has had added apart from pH down and nutes is the air from the pump, what could cause such a huge leap in PPM over three hours ?

Help!
