I was reading the jobs thread and noticed that a lot of you people have quite a bit of experience in computers so here is my situation.

I have I laptop I asked a guy to work on last year and he told me he could hook me up with windows 7 for free so I figured why not, come to find out its a bootleg copy and Microsoft doesn't seem to approve I pretty much can't do anything with it and don't want to buy a copy of windows so I figured I'd put Linux on the computer.

My question is what is the best free Linux OS? Or any other free OS that might be better?

Nobody has any opinions? I went to the ex's and downloaded Ubuntu Linux to a thumb drive when I get home I'll give it a try and see what happens. The worst thing it can do is make a practically useless laptop completely useless.

I use Ubuntu and it works really good. I dont know shit about computers tho but I know I hate widows...lol

Farmer Green, I tried sending you a p.m but your inbox is full

I just downloaded a bootable "preactivated version of windows 7 ultimate" (I.e. You don't need a product key). You should be able to find a torrent for it using those words.

I always use Windows w/o registration. Shit's just too expensive... and linux > me..

There are plenty of good Linux operating systems to choose from. I have Ubuntu on an old computer and it runs well, my recommendation is Ubuntu as it has good update support and a GUI that is easy to learn.

Hi Farmergreen,

As said by many above Ubuntu is a good Linux distribution to start with, also you might want to check out Linux Mint (http://www.linuxmint.com/) the few people i have introduced to Linux has found it even easier to get to grips with, but at the end of the day is personal preference and what works best for you.

Might also want to have a read here http://linuxnewbieguide.org/?page_id=5 to give you a better idea of what is what and make your mind up from there.

I'm using pirated copy of windows 7 and 8 and also Kali linux "Back track" for some Trolling (both windows are activated) GOOGLE is ur frend.
I Don't give F#ck about Microsoft

Thanks for the advice guys! I have never used Linux myself but I had a friend that used red hat Linux back in the day. And if it works out OK I'd love to get all my computers away from Microsoft just for the basic fact that I am certain that they are in league with the NSA, now I feel a lot more confident in Ubuntu and will definitely give it a try
