Lighting Am I crazy?

I'm thinking of getting a Green-Qube 1224 grow tent (120cm x 240cm x 200cm).

In this tent I'm thinking of putting an IWS DWC 6 Pot system http://bit.ly/1evDoPV

And the crazy part, I'm thinking of buying SIX Grow Northern ms0006 LED lamps.

It's crazy in a way because two 600 W HPS lights would cost a fraction of the money and use about the same amount of electricity as 6 x 190 w lights. So the benefits would be lower heat production (which can almost be a bad thing as you want it warm enough for them to transpire) and not replacing lamps and maybe being safer.

Is it really worth the massive price difference?

I've seen some really good results from the likes of Tang and Seymour Buds so I know they can work well, but then again so can HPS.

The main reason I want to use them is because they are new and exciting and everyone here seems to rave about them and I like shiny new stuff

I'm thinking about getting some but the three grow shops I've talked to who are making my doubt myself and stop and think am I doing the right thing. Money is tight and I'm going to be spending my savings on this so I'd like to be reassured I'm making the right decision.

Do you think that Grow Northern LEDs are the best ones currently out there, bang for buck?

Why do you think LED's are better than HPS? (or alternatively why do you think HPS is better)

Do you think the system I laid out above is a good system?

Easy bro and welcome! LED's are still pretty new tech and are getting better and better all the time. I have one gn ms0006 which i use in a dr60. Even If you have the money to spend bro i would deffinately consinder either using fewer or different units? Cant remember how much the gnms0006 weighs but im guessing six of them with a fan and filter would be pretty heavy! Have a look on the gn website at the weight and also check the max load on your tent happy growingn bro. Youve come to the right place :Sharing One:

Yes, you are crazy. Humans are crazy, they just pretend to be normal a lot.

I have a bunch of hobbies, so I try to avoid getting too crazy in one so I have a little left over
for the others.

So I would go HPS. But it's your call, if you want to go high tech and can afford it, why the heck not.
But it does sound like six lights is overkill. The plant can only absorb so much light.

Yes you make an excellent point and that's exactly why I choose the Green Qube grow tent. Originally I was looking at the BudBox but the maximum weight was only 40KG and there wasn't enough cross bars on the roof to hang 6 lights from. Green Qube has a maximum weight of 100 KG. Would be awesome to see the results mate. Tent looks good quality too! Wish i had space for something like that! I would imagine the ammount of bud you would yield would deffinately pay off the lights and tent instead of spending on street deals. Im guessing this isnt your first grow lol?

Hey late - thank you for affirming my craziness and I'm glad I'm not alone!

See for HPS lights usually 50 watts per square foot is good. This tent has 26 square feet so two 600 watt lights at 1200 total watts / 26 square feet = 46 watt per square foot. I would almost be tempted to run 3 x 600's in there so 1800 / 26 square feet = 67 watt per square foot. I like the sound of three lights

With LEDs there's no watts per square foot recommendation. But it seems like 2 x GN ms0006 = 1 x HPS 600 Watt. Hence I was thinking 6 x GN ms0006 would be good for maximum light. I'd be afraid of thinking 'Do I have enough light?' later down the track, so better to start with maxmium light now then wish I bought it later right? Right?


Hey Lewb12 - one day dude you'll have the space! I can feel it's in your future! If I buy this stuff I'll keep you in mind and send you a PM when I start a grow journal. Yes dude I have grown before but not with LED's not with DWC and not in a Tent and not with Autos. So loads of new stuff to learn, I'm excited and reading loads on this forum and feeling like I'm learning a lot. Taking loads of notes here. I'm thinking this setup might give the best chance of success. Also reading people say "now I've gone LED I'll never go back to HPS" just makes me really wonder why and want to find out. Is the quality better? Have you grown using HPS before, do you have any comments on this? Why do people grow with LED?

Why not consider ms0004 units instead? Or a mix of 0006's and 0004's. It sounds like a good idea and I'd like to see the results. It's good to think a little crazy sometimes

What you need to figure is how much area you need to cover. I would suspect 4 of these LED's would give you close to the coverage area wise as the 2 600 watt HPS/HM lights. If so, then it is a savings heat and energywise Then you can spend the extra one upgrading your fan and filter! :Sharing One:

Ive only used leds mate, pretty much for the same reason as you, wanted to see what the fuss was about but i dont regret buying them nor will i change haha theyre are some expert growers on this site that will guid you down your canna path man so i say just go for it. Maybe if you call grow nothern and tell them you use this site and are thinking of buying six units they will do you a deal? Ive heard of other people getting money knocked off for buyin more than one from them so would be worth a try man. Let me know hoe you get on cus i wanna see your journal bro! :tiphat:
