Indoor blue/red lighting question

when I first started growing autos it was under t5 and I had all veg with 1 bloom in it, but it seemed that the plant leaves under the red bulb were dieing so I removed it and used only the veg bulbs with good results. I now grow more plants but under a 1K mh bulb. I read a few times that people use the HPS during the last few weeks of the grow for better yield. does this work? Im leary of tring it cause I don't wanna destroy or injure an intire crop. Im tring to get my grows down to 1 or 2 a year so cant afford any loss. I have enough loss just from pest and whatnot. lol.
