My last MG seeds germinated using the tissues way didn't make it so I'm moving on. This time I am changing the method up. I soaked for 24 hours at 80F in tap water. They did not sink actually. But put them in General Hydro Rapid Rooters using tweezers but it was really hard to get them pointy side down. Pretty sure I"d say they are sideways. Is that going to be ok? Or should I pull them out and work in the pointy side down more and get that part done right?

in theory point down, but to a lot of folk it dont really matter.the seed knows whats up and down.
i seem to have worse luck with germing in winter months, and blamed everything but me.but im sure some were me.
a seed has been known to pop 2 weeks later, rare but give a seed an easy week before digging.
good luck.
:pighug:

Tail down, cool. Tail up or sideways, still cool. Just plant those babies when the tap root is barely showing (18-24 hours). And they’ll right themselves. The tip of the tap root is a “brain” of sorts. :d5:

Tap root is not showing yet. I soaked for 24 hours in tap water. No tap root though. Then I dropped them in the rapid rooters. Did I drop them too early? I can put them back in the water. Its only been an hour in the rooter plugs.

Winter has been tough for me too. I"m pre-warming everything before I use it though as suggested by slow. Water, plugs, coco. I'm also using a seedling heater map and towels to buffer/insulate and a high end expensive chef insta-read thermometer and a laser thermometer to make sure the beans are in an environment that is steady 80F.

You’ll be fine dude. :d5: Digging around and messing with them will cause more harm then good 9/10 times.

I switched to Rapid Rooters, and put mine directly into them without soaking first.
9/9 sprouted within 2 days.

Think it's kind of strange to read all the issues folks are having with germinating seeds. It's not like I've cracked a ton of seeds, maybe 30-35ish but I've had maybe not one germinate. I'd have to wonder if there is an issue in the way folks are storing them or are they maybe very old.

Here is my method.

I take the seeds and throw them into shot glasses of tap water for less than five minutes.
I get a zip loc bag and label it with a sharpie
I get a paper towel and saturate it. Then squeeze it out.
I place the seeds inside the paper towel and then into the zip loc bag.
I place the zip loc bag in a closet inside of a towel. With only one to two layers of the folded towel on top of the zip loc bag. (not much weight)
Lastly I set a repeat alarm on my phone for 24 hour periods going 5 days out. So if I did this at 7pm, I check the bag every day at 7pm.
To check the bag you hold it up to an intense light to inspect for the tail.
Once I have a tail somewhere between 1/4" and 1/2" long I put it in soil. Tail pointing down into the earth.
When I open the hole in the soil I make it just deep enough to accommodate the tap root and I don't pack the soil around the seed. I leave the helmet of the seed at the soil surface so I can see it.
I water every day with a shot glass and dropper, placing drops of water on the helmet directly slowly. This is my attempt to soften the helmet and make it easier for the plant to remove it.

This method has worked for close enough to 100% to call it 100%. I have gotten tails as quickly as 24 hours but it generally takes 2-3 days. I've had a very small selection go longer to the 4th or 5th day. Like maybe 10% (3-4 seeds).

I have had some seeds throw very long tails, 2" and longer.

Just for more info, I handle them all with my hands and never with a tweezer.

Good luck

Tom

I'm surprised it can be such a challenge too. Its probably the easiest part of a grow. I like your method and appreciate the time you took to list it. Good idea using the light to check for taps the the tissue instead of opening it. And I've never heard of leaving the seed helmet at the surface, but darned interesting idea.

I have two sour livers in GH rapid rooters now. No handling required from me for a while I would imagine. Just going to let them be and take a quick peek daily.
