Mephisto Genetics Can I sow my seeds sideways instead of pointy end down?

I plant seeds in their pots, in coco, and get high germination rates. And I do this right in my only tent, where it's always about 80˚F, with the seedlings getting the same light as the other plants. This is as simple as it gets and works (many even say this is the best way with autoflowering strains).

so sideways or pointy side down?

I just drop them in a 1/2-inch hole and cover them up. Seeds work, even in more stressful nature, without needing to be aligned in a particular way.

Yep, this!!
It's all about Newton law... :smoking:

In a few hours I'll be coming up on 72 hours of germination and I have nothing so far with my sour livers. I know its not time to panic and I need to give them more time. But wanted to do a sanity check on my germination method now in case I should change it before going further.

I germinate in my basement and its winter here so its cold and even colder at night. My tent is two doors down and I don't really want to do it there. I like it in my house so I can keep an eye on it. And I've tried in my tent before and that didn't work either.

Using a seedling mat for heat instead. I have dish towels and a plate to buffer the seedling mat from the seeds. And the temperature I have the seeds in is 80 degrees. I have a metal bowl over top of the shot glasses. I do spray a bit of water on the plate as well to add a bit of RH.

I soaked the seeds in a shot glass of tap water for 24 hours. They did not poke out a tap root nor did they sink. I moved them to GH Rapid Rooter plugs at 24 hours. My plugs are moist but not soaking. Just dropped them in the holes of the plugs. Then put a bit of coco over the hole.

That is about it. I check the temp of the plugs with a cooking thermometer and they are consistently right about 80 degrees.

Pictures.

@lunarman , I am not an expert by any means, but the process you explained nearly mirrors mine to a "T". The one major difference is I go to paper towels moistened with water after the 24 hour soak, then paper towels go into a DVD case that then gets placed on the cable box inside a tv armoire. I keep a thermometer in there, and it reads between 80-85dgf at all times. If it drops, I just turn on another piece of electronics, like the dvd player or receiver to add some extra heat. Usually (over 80% of the time) the seed has begun to crack open after the soak, so I only need to wait `18-24 hours for the tap root to get long enough for me to plant. I have used this method for over 100 seeds (mostly photo's) since I started. The one difference I made to this process for germinating AF seeds was to plant in final pot (3 gallon airpot). And then, when I started the process with the seed, I also wetted the medium (soil/perlite with GBD soil addendum) and gave it a couple of days to warm up in the cabinet. I did this so the seedling wouldn't be stunted by the change in temperature (going from DVD case in armoire @ 80dgf to wet soil possibly less then 70dgf). I know this shouldn't be a big deal, but I didn't want to leave anything to chance.

Proud papa ovah here boss. They both sprouted in a few hours when I wasn't watching. I know germinating isn't as exciting as the harvest, but I'm pretty damn happy.

Have a look at this. They look like they were steamed or something. Pretty white looking. How would you handle these at this point? Reduce the heat and humidity but still keep a dome on? Would you move to a tent with full on lights, but off to the side and lights up high? Or outside the tent? I can put them in a tray and dome seedling setup with some t5 lighting.

Gotta say I've never seen white babies before. Not sure what you should do. If I had to sling a guess out there I'd say Nitrogen deficiency. Really don't know.

If I were in you shoes I'd plant them and see what happens. Good luck man.

There are lots of options for what to do next. Usually, the option that is both simplest and logical is the best with these plants. I would just plant the plugs in their final home, and keep a vented transparent cover them for a few days. Actually, my seeds are sprouted right in their coco filled pots in the tent.

All these multi-stage seed manipulations - soaking seeds, removing seeds and putting them in plugs or paper towels, transplanting sprouted seeds to paper towels, and transpalnting plugs and sprouted seeds from paper towels - just seems unneeded (if not crazy) and not suited for sensitive autos. Seeds should not have any problems sprouting and getting a good start in whatever media/soil you are using, in their final home.

Some people believe that a transplant is good for plants. And using a cup at first results in better rooting. I believe this myself, but still need to be very gentle and keep the impact to the plants to a minimum.

I put the plugs in to the clear cups I like to use for 10 days first before going in to the autopots. And I put the cups in a seedling tray/dome in my tent which has 55% RH and good temp and air movement and lots of indirect light. They are looking much better after a night of that. Color looks normal now. I think I'm relatively in the the clear and successfully germinated these 2 sour livers. I think I'll continue to use the GH Rapid Rooters for germinating and tune the method a bit still. Its not perfect yet.

I'm using two clear cups this time. The inside one has the bottom cut off and I wont' remove that when I pot up to the autopots. I'll drop the cup in a hole in the autopot about half the height of the cup. That way I don't disturb the roots by totally removing that cup.
