My buddy and I had this conversation and he thinks when growing from seed the odds of getting a top notch pheno is fairly low, like maybe 1-3 out of 10. I don't have any experience growing so I was hoping you guys could drop some knowledge on me.
Basically I'm wondering if you grew 10 Mephisto seeds of the same strain, how many would you typically be super happy with and how many would you be disappointed in?

Great question

Not really disappointed (at least in Mephisto gear), but more like what you are looking for. Now that could be the first seed grown or 100th. Just depends. Most Mephisto strains are pretty consistent. But then comes questions, like grow environment, Lighting, water and ect.

Haven't had any of my mephisto girls disappoint. That being said, you will get genetic variations more from seed... you are getting children... and while all the girls might be beautiful... there's usually 1 sister that is hotter than the others... same applies here.

With photos, you can pheno hunt for the perfect girl, find her and and clone. No genetic variation...

But... I like variations, when they are all top notch, and mothers and clones bring their own needs and problems.

Also how does your buddy grow? Could sound like from clones, which means someone already found a plant they like and just take clippings. All the work looking for that phenotype to keep as a mother is already done.

Also autoflowers have such a short life span keeping clones will not work. Hell with the advancements in tech who knows in the future. But for now autoflowers from seeds only.

He's not growing, we're setting something up together. He's leaning more towards clones or pheno hunting photos and I want to do an autoflower run.

Yea then he is kinda right in a sense. He just have to look for what he is looking for. And photos are def for him.
For autoflowers, now it’s a little different. You will get ppl that say autoflowers are lazy and easy. Which they can be. There are some stuff that can get in-depth, and just as much as in photos. Depends on how far ya willing to go.

I will say this, AFN is an awesome place to be for growing. For Autoflowers and Photoperiod growers. A lot of growers on here grow both photo and autos, and really well.

Unless you have the room to run 20 plus plants...your not going to be able to have a large enough selection, more than likely....

A lot of photo strains are left @ F1 so first cross. Genetic variation will be very high between mother and father. Big farms can run hundreds to look for 1 or 2 mothers.

Most of mephisto gear is @ f4, the selection process has been refined, so variance is less.

When I was running photos for a $crop, was part of a group of 5. We would all drop and select from around 100 plants.

If, your somewhere legal, with a lot of activity, clones are available from some of the breeders here on the coast, so, pheno hunting can be avoided by going directly. Saw Gellato 33 clones from SF farms the other day locally.

Correct, and most are 1 and done runs, not offered again. Like I'm hearing about gold glue... I got a bunch of seeds, am thinking about taking it to f2 myself.

Make that f3...already f2.
