Hey all I go by Cavetoad. I am a complete newbie to growing and I very rarely smoke. My reason for getting into growing is for the fun of it and to provide for my wife and some friends who need access. I am an engineer by trade so love the figuring it out as much as anything and being nature there are always new variables to try to understand.

The first grow will be getting under way in a couple of weeks, I'm still waiting for some important parts to arrive.

The set up, and please feel free to comment if you see somewhere I've messed up:
5X5X7 Grow tent
2-Platinum P900 lights w/ timer
Top Drip DWC in two 6 bucket groups, 5 plants and 1 reservoir for a total of 10 plants
6" vent system w/ carbon filter and 350cfm fan on a temp and speed controller
2 air pumps and 2 water pumps.
Advanced Nutrients Sensi Series
2 8" oscillating fans

Sorry, I've never learned how to do things in moderation.

I think my first grow is going to be Robocop Auto from Cream of the Crop Seeds

Welcome to AFN. Being new to indoor growing and auto's myself I can tell you first hand this is a great place to learn and become a better grower. I found starting a journal is by far the best way to figure things. Have fun and good luck.

Nice set up dude and welcome to AFN. Have you though about just dong soil for your first run, a lot less can go wrong and simple way to get to your first harvest. Getting a journal going is the best way to learn, tag me if you do by placing an @ in front of my name and I shall jump on in for the ride.

Thanks everyone for the support and advice, it's been great lurking around here and picking up info. Hopefully in the next 2 weeks I can start a journal as the grow actually gets underway. I'll have to learn how all of the slaps and other things work so I can be more involved.

As for the choice of dirt over hydro, largest factor to be honest is that growing in dirt would be a big red flag where I am. There is nothing but sand here and it's the wrong time of year for anyone to be doing any potting. Also, being an engineer, hydro just feeds my need to design and figure shit out. Lastly, I will freely admit it, I want the hopefully faster and stronger yield.

I've never done things in moderation either. Go big or not at all haha. Welcome to AFN. You definitely chose the proper place to learn as much as possible. Unlimited info, help, and kind people here. There are growers here that grow for their spouses or others. I'm glad you found your way here. Happy growing! You have a nice setup.
