Harvest & Curing Help with Dry/Cure

Moving to this. This came to me in a flash. I made it without getting up! The sensor is up to 64% so hopefully the harvest is not lost. Hopefully, the people who cure in jars will be equally responsible for my success. The baggers got me this far. I am bound and determined to figure this out.

Well I wouldn't of guessed this but after I jarred it up and put in that sensor, its at 76% after all night. It spent 4 nights in the bag and last night in a jar. If the RH is in the 50's wouldn't it just continue to dry and become crunchy? I just hate to lose this harvest to the hay smell!
Just checked the dial hygrometer it is at 65% in the jar. The digital sensor is at 76%. Curious.

I will be ready to begin this process for the first time in a couple of weeks. Though I haven't done it yet, I have done TONS of research, and from everything I have read, it seems that you are making it too complicated. You need to leave them in the bag, the first time, closed, and stop messing with them. most things I read say 3-5 days. THEN open the bag and check them. They SHOULD seem crispy and dry. The Jars equalize the moisture by allowing the moisture in the center of the buds to move toward the outside. You thought they were dry, but after 12 hours in the jars, you see that they were actually still wet.

The next part of the process further removes the chlorophyll (Hay smell). As I understand it, when the jars are sealed for longer periods, an anaerobic(Thrives in a 0 oxygen environment) bacteria forms, which slowly consumes the chlorophyll, removing the hay smell.

I have seen lots of people say to close the bag up and leave it alone. The more you open the bag, remove things, obsessively check and re-check, the more stuff you keep letting out of the bag, and the more you are allowing the humidity to fluctuate, when what you want is a steady semi-sealed environment that allows the moisture to be absorbed into the paper of the bag, while allowing the terpines to be retained in the bag and be continually reabsorbed by the flowers (by not opening it).

With the jars, my research indicates that you let it sit, sealed, for 12-24 hours to allow the moisture to equalize, then burp. Then continue to burp regularly until the desired humidity is reached. Then when you can seal it for days/weeks at a time, the bacteria will further improve your taste and smell by consuming the chlorophyll.

I am very interested to see how this all works out for you. I hope you end up with some awesome smoke. I stand to learn a lot here.

Greenjeans cited that a critical part of curing is the enzymatic reactions that come from natural growth of diverse microbial flora in and on the herbal material, breaking down chlorophyll and other less desirable plant materials.

Does anyone yet sell live microbial products tailored to curing? For example, a dried powder mixture of the right bacteria and fungi to inoculate your fresh harvest?

Ya, well you've been proven correct already. The nugs I took out of the bag are reading a steady 79% in the jar. I knew they had moisture on the inside as my previous attempts I would dry then bottle and feel them get soft and "wet" again. I just freaked when I was getting readings of 50% in the bag. I thought it would just continue to dry out and get crumbly. I just couldn't wrap my head around why it would not continue to dry and just turn to a super dried out bud that crumbles to dust.
Well they were in the bag 4 days. Now in the jar being closely monitored. I'll burp until it reaches a 62% then I'll leave it shut for a week or two.
Now the really bad news. Because of shit beyond my control, I was forced to take down my grow. I had 2 plants that only had a few weeks left. 2 a few weeks behind them and 2 more a month or so behind. I was set up for a continuous harvest for 2 months. All had to come down, within a 2hr span had to get it all down. Such a shame. I had a Red Poison that had just shown purple and was doing really well. Its all in the bag. I chopped what I could salvage and chucked it all in the bag. Per your post and what I now know, I'm not touching the bag till July. Even though they were chopped early, had no flush and are tiny little buds, certainly they'll do the trick when the time comes. Such a crock of shit that these plants are illegal. All I smoke for is to goto sleep at night. I didn't smoke for years and when I wanted to again, instead of going out on the street, I grew my own. Unfortunately I do not own where I live. And thats all I'm going to say about that.
Thanks for everyones input. I will update in the end and let ya'll know how it turns out.

Damn dude sorry to here of your early harvest. Here's hoping to a new grow in the near future:cheers:

If you are getting 79% in the jars you should put them back in a bag for a couple more days. You want to get them to the point that after being in a sealed jar for 12-24 hours you are getting a reading more in the 64%-68% humidity. Jarring too early can cause mold problems. Then you start taking the humidity down slowly by burping, maybe removing from the jars for short periods of time if the humidity is still above 64-65. Once they hit that 64-65 range, just burp a couple of times a day, and keep giving them that 12 hour period to equalize before you trust a reading. Seal them up once they hit 62 and can remain at that humidity for 24+ hours in a sealed jar. Keep checking the humidity without opening the jars to make sure they are staying constant. If not, burp some more until everything is equalized inside the jar and 59%-62% is stable.

So I've got the original harvest nugs down to 63-64%. The emergency harvest nugs are around 68-70%, measured with the same instrumentation. Is there any reason why I shouldn't mix the two? I want to put them in the same jar and cure it all together. They are both within a close range. I could dry rhe emergency harvest buds a bit more by themselves but as long as they are very close I don't see where any problems should arise. I am curing it for weeks on end this time around so I'd like to put them all in the same jar to do so.
Speak now or forever hold your peace or if there is a better idea out there, be glad to hear someones input on the matter!
