New Grower How do you check your soil ph?

I have the $10 Home Depot meter that always says the same thing "7". I also have the roughly $100 nice red Hanna digital ph meter. It's works great on liquids. But I want to also check soil ph, so my question is how do you do it? I have been looking at one of these Hanna HI 99121
Direct Soil pH Measurement Kit $300

Is there some middle ground between $10 and $300 that works or a way to use my liquid Hanna meter?

Not sure all the math there but if you search forum you'll find a thread you'd use your Hanna this way measure the run off after water vs the ph of what went in... Please some pipe in and make some sense for me... Lol... Get the idea?

Here's some good info on ph.....
If your runoff pH is higher than your starting pH, use this equation to determine your soil pH:*
Soil pH = Runoff pH + Difference

If your runoff pH is lower than your starting pH, us this equation:
Soil pH = Runoff pH - Difference.

For example, say your the starting pH of your solution before it goes in is 6.5 and the pH of your runoff is 7.0. The difference is +0.5, so using the above equation:
Soil pH = 7.0 + 0.5*
Soil pH = 7.5

If your starting pH is 6.5 and your runoff is 6.0, your difference is -0.5 and using the above equation:
Soil pH = 6.0 - 0.5
Soil pH = 5.5

Those cheap soil testers are pretty worthless, very inaccurate and not to be trusted. For a good, reasonably priced soil probe, check the Control Wizard Accurate 8. https://www.autoflower.org/f25/control-wizard-accurate-8-ph-meter-12771.html

You can also use your Hanna to check run off, which will give you a fairly accurate indication of your soil pH. When you water your plants, give enough so that about 10% runs out the bottom of the pots. Capture that run off and test it using your Hanna.
