Here's a weekly update!

The leaf curling is heat stress. I had no idea my tent was getting to 98 degrees!! Not good for DWC. I switched lighting schedules to have the lights off during the hottest part of the day and on at night.

I also did a res change yesterday and upped the nutes to 1/3 strength just to make sure there was enough calcium and magnesium in there. Seems to be liking the change!

Thankfully the hottest part of the summer is upon us and in a month or so plants should be growing without any worry at all about heat. The area these are grown in is shut off and not heated, so I will be keeping the light schedule to be off during the warmest part of the day in fall and winter. This will ensure that the plants stay warm enough while the lights are out.

Forgot how well oxford cloth and Mylar hold the heat from the lights. I have also introduced more fans.

Today I took the LED out of the tent and just put in a simple floro shop light. This should bring the heat down to a level that will work. The leaves were even more curled today and I was worried that there might be a chance for nute burn with the temps high, even when the lights are off during the hottest part of the day. I just have to hold on for one more month, then the temps will start to nose dive. After last winter I never would have thought I would be wishing for colder weather...

Word to the wise: The new LED's don't run as cool as the old ones! Keep this in mind when planning your garden!

Leaves coming from top shoots seem to be curl free so far. Anyone out there who has had to deal with heat stress: Is it normal for the leaves that have curled to remain so? Maybe I am just not waiting long enough? They are still curled at the tips, not more than before but still there. There is no yellowing in them, which is leading me to believe that this is not a Cal/Mag issue. Any input would be appreciated. Sorry, no time for pics as I am heading to work. As usual. Someday I will have a job where I don't have to work overtime, some day haha!

Well she's starting to display some yellowing in the center new growth. I am wondering if she wants Cal/Mag or more light since I switched to the shop light.

Curling seems to have stopped in the new growth. She is due for a nute change tomorrow. I will do a light feeding with GH Cal/Mag and see what happens. Like I said before I am doing 1/3 strength GH flora nutes now. RO water. I've never used RO water before, it's an entirely different animal. My spliff seeds White Widow under another CFL is doing fine without any Cal/Mag but these are obviously different strains so the HBSS could have more of an appetite.

I would imagine she would be stretching like hell if she wasn't getting enough light. Truthfully there really hasn't been much gain in height at all during the week. Any suggestion guys? Mitch? I know it's something on my end, she was doing great right out of the shoot...

Edit: If you do think it is a Cal/Mag issue should I use the light feeding (1 teaspoon per gallon) or do a heavy feeding (2 teaspoons per gallon)? She is in a 3.5 gallon bucket.

Edit 2: Just hit the bed and thought of this and had to get up to put this out there... Maybe I should just up her feed? I just have had bad experiences with GH nutes and burning young plants. The pale green and yellowing leaves seem to indicate she is hungry, and GH swears up and down that when using the 3 part series you don't need Cal/Mag. Maybe 1/2 or 3/4? Really leery about bumping her up to full strength on a dime though. Just a thought, and sincerely I really appreciate any ideas! See you in the morning "uuuuggghhhh.."

I would suggest doing a light feeding with calmag and get her back under your LED if possible. Move it up high and let her reach for it.

I would follow these guys suggestions re: cal mag.
is there a way to amend your environment? What's your extraction?
Kind regards, mitch

Thanks guys I will get some cal/mag in there in the change today. Should I do the light feed or the heavy? Do you think I should up my feed also? Mitch how big of eaters are the HBSS? I will see what I can do to get that LED back in there too:)

Edit: Sorry Treeman just got up, saw you said light feed. No caffeine yet haha

Hey nben, I've been using Botanicare calmag + which also contains iron. Feeds have been as high as 2.5mL/L and started very lightly around day 10 up until a week before final clense along with my base nutes (grown in soiless mix)

I'd give her 1.5mL/L to begin with than try and ramp it up if shes handling it well.

:peace:
