I'm considering some CFLs to supplement my main light. Would it be OK to plug 4 CFLs into a muliplug extension cord and then plug that into a timer, which is itself plugged directly into the wall socket?

Or is this approach asking for trouble?

Most timers have a fairly low amp rating. Add up the total amps of your lights and make sure they don't exceed the amp rating of the timer.

Thanks guys I'll try and add them up. I've not actually bought the CFLs yet so I'll have to see what's out there.

Yeah I did this and broke 2 timers even with it being under the amps

If it is a quality multi plug with surge protector, there should be no problem. I use a seven plugs no problem. Total amperage is what matters.
