The tl;dr version: They’re considered beneficial to the plants. They are indicative of rich soil. Don’t eat them. I need to let the top of the soil dry out before the next watering.

Naaaa. I really don't care much for the Gulf.
Thinking about it, it's really a Pacific island thing. The vast majority of the ocean is really sparse with life. Life is concentrated around land masses, from coastal mainlands to coral atolls to volcanic islands.
I love the blue waters of the Pacific.
