Hey everybody...first time grower from Chicago. I figure I would start with autoflowers because the length in time, overall size of the plant and ease in growing(I hope).

Looking to really learn as much as I can at growing plants and cloning. And maybe expand into building grow boxes in the future.

i was going to buy a box, but I just couldn't justify the cost for little box with not even 100w in it for what...$300+! No way!

so I'm building my own simple square box. 4'Hx4'Wx2'D. Putting it in a 4'x4' closet with 400w of lighting.

thinking of starting with Sour Diesel and Pineapple Kush. Growing 6 plants at a time in a DWC hydro.

i have found a lot of info on this site so I'm excited to get started. Hoping to start by July..

im sure I will have plenty of questions so thank you in advance for the help.

Welcome Joe, even if you are from Chi Town. I grew up Small Town Iowa and would visit your city every summer to stay with my Uncle and Family. That was back in the 60's. Riots and shit man.

Anyway, Can you make your box bigger? I garden in a 3 X 3 grow area but the space itself is much larger. Just asking since you are building from scratch. You may want to try the Dragons. Mine have stayed the shortest of all that I have grown so far. With only a 4 foot ceiling you are going to lose a foot on the bottom for the container and a foot at the top for the lights and fans, so you are only left with 2 feet to grow in. That should be plenty of light. Have fun man!

Well I'm not a big fan chi town either...way to cold for me. I like the south much better, Charleston, the beach.


The closet is 4'x4'....I was gonna go bigger but then I wouldn't be able to get into the box...4'x2' deep I can do two doors 2' wide..plus I'm hoping it gives me extra room for clones down the road. And yeah I was figuring about 2ft or so of grow space. Plants should be like 1'-2' tall.

I found a 400w ballast light with retractable rope for only $100...with two bulbs. Planning on just going cheap n getting 2 100cfm fans n go with some clip on fans inside as well. And I like to add 2 T5 lights vertically on the sides.

If I can vent outside n letting in fresh area, will that be a benefit or no?

Welcome Joe, good for you doing a DIY box. Any one can buy a tent but it takes a bit of get and go to build yer own. Best of luck with that chum. You do know that Auto's cannot be cloned dontcha ? Thought so.

Welcome aboard, Joe. Your plants must have a supply of fresh air. They breathe just like we do. A 400w light will generate a ton of heat in that small area. Wire the ballast on the outside so it doesn't add extra heat. Experiment with lights on and doors closed for a few hours and check temps before you put your plants in. Also, 4ft is short considering you want to keep the light over a foot above the plants. Even a short auto can stretch to 3ft easily.

Yeah you are right. Forgot what I read. You can clone them, they go back into veg state and then into Flower, but the yield on them would be nuthing.

Yeah Im alittle worried about the heat. I know the box is on the small size, but I have very limited space. Kinda of why I went with the AFs.

Figure I start with 6 plants..3 Pineapple Kush and 3 Sour Diesel.

I have a 4x4 closet that I want to put the box in. It has two walls that are outside walls. Thought about drilling a few holes to let in some fresh air and to also vent out.

I was looking at all the boxes online, $300+ just for a 36"24"9.5" with barely 100w...I started looking around and reading on here about what a waste of money! So I found a 400w hps/mh light for $100..I would like to hydro with a 6 plants.

But man IDK..this is my first time..been wanting to this a long time ago. I'm excited to have a project. I just dont have alot of space or money...and shit sho does? right lol

I spent a couple of years in Great Lakes back in the late 60's.:Wind Chilllll..:. I still haven't warmed up!
If heat and space become an issue, you may even consider growing under the T5's, with maybe some CFL's for side lighting.

I also have a small cab, only 38w x 38h x 20d inches. I went with a T5 24in 96w (4-tube) fixture with a couple hundred watts of cfl supplements for two plants. Luckily I managed to keep them at 20in. I keep the light only a couple inches from the tops.

I couldn't run this setup without an active ventilation system. Temps were hitting 95f. I got a 4in hurricane centrifugal fan 160cfm or so and a 4x12in phresh scrubber and vent out the top. Temps are 85-88f with doors closed and lights on..and that's only 5-8f higher than with lights off. Ambient room temp at 72f. Not to mention the awesome scrubbing powers of the phresh can is a nice benefit O

I grew 2 White Widow autos in DWC for my first grow. When fully grown, they took up most of a 4'x3' area! IMO you need to rethink the idea of 6 plants in a space that small unless you plan on some tiny plants! And being new, 2 plants will be easier to manage and with some luck, you should get a couple ounces if not much more. DWC doesn't make small plants...........
