As an introduction, I really don't know what to say, but here is my story.

I have a strong background in horticulture and have grown and collected everything fom cacti & succulents, tropical ornamentals, fruits and vegitables, trees and shrubs. So I am very familiar with many forms of cultivation. But I have not grown marijuana since the 70s, and that was a pathetic closet setup that never produced anything from Mexican dirt weed seeds.

I am going to grow just one or two plants at a time on my condo balcony. (Fears of smell worry me but I am high enough in the building, and because of the nature of the design of my building I can hide my grow.)

After days of research I ordered some seeds completely blind (Sour Spyder auto fem). I hope to push an early crop and have something by July.

I need to figure out soils, fertilizers and everything and am sure I will need some advice from time to time. Wish me luck!

Welcome! I'm one of the older (age wise) ones here and live just North of the Columbia. I think there are going to be a lot of balcony grows coming up in Oregon really soon! Autos will be the way to go too so you are in the right place!

After July 1st, you will be legal to have either 4 or 6 plants for personal use. There will no need to fear the smells! It will be legal man. LEGAL!

Have fun man.

Portland police already are ignoring marijuana use, but in reality they have not bothered for years. My idea is to have a small crop under my belt by the time it becomes "officially" legal so I can have some of my own bud to take to the Cannabis Cup here in July. My real problem is not legality per se. It is the high rise building I live in, which is strictly non smoking. I was sent a nasty letter once threatening eviction because a guest had a cigarette in my balcony! People here are phobic of any smells.

My idea is to grow some other herbs with stronger smells, perhaps lavender would work, and my usual tomato plant. Suggestions for odiferous companion plants are welcome!

I have searched all over for the type of grow (balcony) that I am going to do, but there seems to be little discussion on this topic. Lots of indoor, hydroponic, greenhouse and in-ground outdoor grow information, but little on balcony grows in containers. Being a semi-professional horticulturist (and a bit OCD) I always research a lot before I start a project. This time I am starting almost blind and will have to learn as I go using my own background as my guide. My first step was choosing a seedbank to trust, then choosing seeds. Of course I chose a seed variety which is somewhat uncommon...

Our fearless leader Aunty Mossy grows some on a balcony.

I don't think it is much more than an outdoor grow, other than security. Maybe the hours of light per day might effect growth.

However it doesn't seem like you are worried about yeild. At least at first.

We will get you going. And we are glad to have you along

Peace

Welcome!

You already have some distinct advantages pertaining to your goals....and now you're here. :)

It really is a cake-walk now.

You may consider indoors and in a tent as the smells are so controllable with a carbon scrubber
and an exhaust fan.

just my 2 cents, coming from an "older newb" myself. Started growing in April :)

Thank you for the welcomes!

Day length and light are not a problem, my condo is on the 5th floor of a high rise and faces due south and there is no light obstruction! It might get too hot in the summer and may have to provide some shade, at least on the containers to keep the roots cooler.

Seeds were ordered yesterday and with any luck will arrive in about 2 weeks. My first decission will be to decide whether to start the seed early inside or to sow them directly a bit later having read that autoflowering plants dislike transplanting...but I do want to get an early start.

Don't Over homework it.
There is Lots of Contrary theory about.

Grow your first one exactly as you would a Tomato plant on your balcony..no more Mystic than that.

Odour is always going to be a problem.
Jasmine is a perfect Mask for canna smells..

My patio is 3 floor up..so most of my smell goes over everyones head..but on the heavy overcast days with little wind movement it can reach ground floor level..when it does I flush jeyes fluid down the drain pipes to cancel it out.

Also..think of one of those room freshners that squirt a burst every 30/60/90 minutes..there is a glade lavender one that is quite effective..more reliable than having flowers in Bloom at the right time.

Good Luck..:tiphat:

Thank you Mossy!

But...I always "over homework" it. LOL.

My major concern is not my ability given my background. It is making a mistake that will kill my first plant since I am going to grow just one plant early, pushing the season a bit.

I have started a written paper journal and will start an online one here. Pictures will be posted.
