Opinions on Cannabis Cups

Cannabis breeding (strain dev./seed manufacturing) lacks any meaningful trade and professional associations that typically get involved in organizing conferences, competitions, setting standards, etc. Otherwise, it's not like anyone expects cannabis 'cups' to be truly fair or relevant to their interests.

There seems to be a desire among respondents for cups to rigorously and fairly judge and rate cannabis. Such serious competitions should be just that, likely best done totally on their own (not be public/marketing events), or be held as part of professional/trade association conferences. 'Cups' should not be a side show at public 'festivals' or other marketing events as many, if not most, currently appear to be.

Do you know of any groups that particularly represent genetic breeders in the industry? Closest thing I can think of is when the whole "Phylos Galaxy" thing was trying to gain steam (and look how that crashed and burned.)

Honestly sometimes it feels like we as a forum do more advocating for "what is right" then most other platforms.

What if you partnered up with (for example) multiverse beans…? They at least have a relationship with a large number of breeders, and probably wouldn’t mind keeping their in house strains out of it…. Just a stoned and fleeting thought… :pass:

That is a curious idea. Even more curious why we don't see the Herbies Cup, or Seedsman Cup, etc?

Truth be told, I feel that the canna culture is slowly dying…. And most in the industry are focused on capitalism, and separating themselves from old school stoner culture. :pass:

Dude, I 100% agree with you.

I have spoken with many people in the cannabis industry that have said the same thing. Dan Jimmie with Gnome Automatics and I actually talk about this frequently.

It's almost like there's a "new age" of growers or consumers, and they don't give a fucking shit about anything unless it involves giving you the middle finger, telling you that you don't know shit regardless of what type of knowledge you drop on them, and then telling you to get fucked. :crying:

I've been doing market research on forum trends and activities, virtually all forums (not just cannabis) have seen a massive traffic dip in the past 3 years (since around 2022,) because of AI. Specifically, it's called "zero-click" behavior, which means that because AI is now on virtually every major platform, including searches, users are generally give a DIRECT answer without actually having to click an external link.

Now, while this seems like a major boner for us, it correlates with a different type of activity that we've seen, which is a massive increase in the amount of bots that crawl the site. We went from like a dozen to THOUSANDS. That's AI. Querying the forum.

Covid changed people, and not for the better, as well.

One of our intentional shifts is to focus on more updated, relevant educational content, so at the very least we are feeding the bots (and AI knows where the sources are cited, whether you ask for that information or not.)

What if you started a companion YouTube channel, to the forum….providing educational videos targeted at the home grower community, and mmj community. Then, that would drive traffic here….and maybe even get you a new way to get sponsor money (featured products, etc)…. :pass:

:rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl: Tells you how good their weed isn’t.

That was an idea already (channel is already created, we have like over 50+ followers on it so we can already live stream, etc.) But, that requires someone to make that content. Edit that content. Post that content.

And that's the rub.
