Firstly, that leaf curl you are seeing is 100% normal, it's quite common for the first few set of leave to curl or twist or even be deformed, it will have no effect on your plants overall vitality and health
Also, it is okay to keep the initial res running a bit longer but to be safe I still like to change the res once a week to avoid any chance of bacteria/slime build up. Using a chiller is great if you can, 24 degrees is starting to reach the dangerous side of the scale as far as root rot is concerned so just keep a close eye on the skunk. The difference in size will all be down to genetics/phenotypes rather than anything you are doing to them as well
