Indoor Switching From Fox Farm's Ocean Forest to Canna Terra Pro Plus

Well... I started out using Roots Organics soil and due to constant shipping problems and a bit of inconsistency I switched to Fox Farms Ocean Forest. I liked the Roots Organics a bit more but the differences seem to be negligible. I've seen here and there people using Canna Terra Pro soil which is a real bitch to find in the states. Well... the stuff finally cropped up on Amazon from a distributor that I've used before and trust (good, discrete packaging, and fast, consistent shipping).

Anything I should know about this Canna Terra Professional Plus? Are there going to be any major differences between it and the Ocean Forest? I'm hoping higher potency and bigger yields is it! Ha...anyways any information is greatly appreciated!

The Canna soil is very different from the OF. OF contains a lot of organic nutrients in form of worm castings and guano. The Canna is a soil less mix that contains white peat, coir, composted bark, dolomitic lime, organic NPK fertiliser, and mineral NPK fertiliser. No castings or guano. With the OF there is no need to feed the plants for the first 3-4 weeks. With the Canna you will likely find the starter nutes will be exhausted after the first week, so you will have to start feeding then. When growing soil less it will be up to you to supply everything the plant needs in the way of nutrients throughout the whole grow. Personally, I'm no fan of soils that contain bark, especially as a substitute for perlite. If you want to grow soil less, I would suggest you take a look at Pro Mix or Sunshine #4. Pro Mix HP if you are using LEDs, T5s or CFLs, Pro Mix BX if you are using HPS.

Never had the Problem with Canna to need ferts after a week more after 6 weeks. And its imho the bestSoil u can get on the Market. All the Bio Proffesors from the Uni buy that in the Growshop where i always Shop. But if u aim for High Yields try Hempybuckets or Dwc that defo Rocks. Im changing to Hempys for a try at the next Round.

Im using Canna Pro (no plus). When i started i had some PH problems but after adding some extra dolomite its been fine since and ive grown 3 more ladies (as well as the 2 that started off dodgy). I have a mate whos been growing f 30 plus years and he swears by it. Its not a biased opinion either as hes tried others and reckons canna terra is the one... n hes the main man so i believe him lol.

I used to use a mix of Ocean Forest and Happy Frog. The Ocean Forest was just for extra water retention. Lately I've just subtracted the Ocean Forest from the equation. I'm 99% sure that Happy Frog contains mycorhizzal fungus and maybe "bacteriorhyzza" (for lack of a better word.) Mycorhyzzae can modulate the amount of water and nutrients that go to a plant, so it seems like over/under-watering is less of an issue. My loyalty to Fox Farms company stems simply from the fact that there are relatively few grow shops in my locale with limited product diversity, but it seems to work fine (other than needing added nutrients.)

Sorry Medic, but I'm having a hard time accepting that. Even the Canna site recommends feeding after the 1st week.

Great replies guys. It's amazing Grasscity is a much larger forum but never as helpful as you guys.

Couple things. I've had to start feeding with Ocean Forest on Fay 10 consistently. I also use A LOT of different nutes. Great White being one so the mycorrhizal is covered. So maybe this is the stuff for me.

Thanks for the kind words. Many of us here were refugees from Grasscity, RUI, ICMag and other forums where we saw how rudely people, especially new growers, were often treated. We learned how not to run a forum.

Muddy, why the Pro Mix HP for LED specifically? I'll have to check it out

HP doesn't contain any vermiculite, which BX does have. I've found that the BX holds a bit more moisture than the HP and tends to take too long to dry out under the lower heat of LEDs, T5s and CFLs. I'm not able to get HP in my area anymore, so have switched over to Bonnie Professional Potting Mix. It's a basic soil less mix that contains Sphagnum peat, perlite, dolomite lime and a wetting agent. The exact same ingredients as HP, minus the myco, which I can easily add myself. It doesn't contain as much perlite as HP, so I'm adding about 10% more to it and so far, the results have been very good. It's also a bit cheaper and I can buy it at my local Ace Hardware store. An added benefit is that the starting pH is a bit lower, about 6.7, compared to 6.9 - 7 for HP and BX.

Your right Muddy i looked at my Growlogs on the old Forum it wasnt Canna Soil. Thought i was using only Canna back then but it was Plagron Royal Mix.... he must been run out of Canna and i boght that one instead lol....sometimes a Stoners Mind is like the one of a dude with Alzheimer arghh Sry for the wrong advice.

I see... due to lower temps I expected and have noticed a decrease in water usage with my switch to LED. I don't add perlite to the Ocean Forest so I was hoping the CTP+ would help with this. I take immunosuppressants so I try to minimize contact with soil and feces. Well... I've always avoided contact with fecal matter haha but anyways. So... I've been looking for something that fits my needs straight out of the bag. Aside from soil-specific nutes I could prolly grow DWC with the arsenal of nutes I employ.

Well there is one sure way to find out. I've got a DP AutoUltimate going into the CTP+ tonight. I'm definitely doing a journal so I guess the proof will be in the pudding. ... it's a weird ass saying but in this case applicable. Thanks for all of the info guys.
