Hey Buds! I was chatting with Dazed and wwwillie (respectively lol) and it turns out we 3 are Audio Engineers (by Career) so I thought we should have a place where all us Frequency Hounds/Junkies/Nerds can convene and discuss our favorite things! Smoking and Dialing Shit IN!!!

This is for ALL avenues of Engineering... From the at home hobbyist to the Pro and everything in between! No egos, no trolls, just good times!!! And I'm sure we can all pick up a few things from each other!!

I'll kick it off by saying my career started WAY back in the 90's (it's way back now lol) recording my next door neighbors' band in the drummers garage with a Roland VS-840 DAW. In my 15+ year as a Pro I have worked with musicians from all genres, all walks of life... I've worked with Rock n Roll hall of famers, people who SHOULD be in the Hall of Fame, Magicians, commercial editing, etc... I've even had some of my work air on "America's Got Talent"... (and dude made it all the way to the finals in the first season! Should have won if you ask ME!!) My Resume is too long and too much to list at the moment lol but the stories and banter I am totally looking forward too!!!

SO let's get it crackin'!! :Sharing One:

One thing that's on my mind right now is production... I have my xbox 360 on shuffle... Iron Maiden for instance... They have used that same engineer for years... I don't understand how he can record one for the most PERFECTLY produced digital albums I've ever heard. CLEAN. (Seventh Son of a Seventh Son) Then follow up with the most HORRIBLY METALLIC Digital Album I've ever HEARD! (Somewhere Back in Time). I mean I can't listen to the damn album and it pisses me off! LOL Am I jaded?

Digital sound networks are my speciality. I designed the above when I turned 22, (last week) ahem!

Good luck to you propeller heads with you new thread.

eP.

Oh yes, a thread us audio nerds can finally geek out in! :Sharing One:

Well, I've been working in the industry for coming up 10 yrs (most would call me a noob lol). Started off playing in bands around 13yrs old, realised I was never going to make a living playing because I am average at best lol, so went for a career on the other side of the glass. I did a few years of live sound, gigs, festivals, churches, you name it. Finally got a break at a big studio 6yrs ago, never looked back. Up to press I've had a few commercial releases, worked with some of my hero's (here in UK), lived in LA working in some of my dream studios and overall had a blast. Took a year out last year to look after mum when she got sick. Back in the game now with a few local projects and thinking about going into some part time music production teaching while I'm here.

Lol, Rebel we are all jaded aren't we!?? I am going to listen to those two albums now-it's crazy how times have changed our perception of what a great record sounds like. I almost gave up the will to live when I saw Kanye West fans commenting on how he had opened doors for "Sir" Paul McCartney and was going to make him "big", lol, not funny really-quite disturbing!

For now I'd like to get real nerdy and post a pic of my one and only fav piece of gear.......the blue stripe 1176..

Awesome Dazed!! You and I sound like we were blown around the world a bit because of this Audio stuff! I've played guitar since I was 8 (formally 12). I'll be 35 in April. Between Engineering and Playing it has brought me places I'd never thought I'd ever be or go. It's amazing isn't it?

All you need to do is listen to Infinite Dreams (Seventh Son) and then Wasted Years (Somewhere...) you'll go WTF?! This is the same DUDE?! Shocking really since Maiden are hard core about ever aspect of their production... live or studio... makes me wonder what the heck went on there!

Kanye West BURNS MY ASS. He is like a 5 year old with the keys to the castle! But without raging on about a tw*t... YEAH he "discovered" Sir Paul... and his recent antics at the Grammys... Shirley Manson of Garbage was BRILLIANT in her comments on him... Don't know if you saw. I applaud her! :kusht:

Oh hell YES! the ol' 1176! There is something about classic outboard gear... I once had G.A.S. for TWO whole years! "Gear Acquiring Syndrome" LMAO!

That's awesome you got to work with one of your heroes man!

Totally agree my friend, I need to see what SM said, that Kanye is fool!
G.A.S lol, I've never managed to shake it!

Today I'm working on a record where the client pulled these bad boys out...

Oh Boy!!
I am in way over my head now. Just a humble hobbyist here! I do enjoy building gear and using it though! Lat project was a Raspberry Pi musice server/player with an I2S DAC built into it! Sweet little project. Happy to share if anyone is interested.

Ooooh sounds groovy - let's see it! :niceshot:

No pictures yet! I'll get some.
So, it starts with my collection of music (and video) being ripped and on disk, I no longre own physical media, IE: CD, DVD, and BluRay. To access it is simply a matter of connecting to my network or one of my servers. For this project you will need at least some of your tunes to be on a network share accessible via NFS or CIFS.
Raspberry Pis have an I2S port built right into them and there are now several I2S DACs available that will plug right into it (Well kinda, some solder may be required on some). Now we add a custom Linux OS loaded with an interpretation of MPD and you have the Server/Player. In my case I have a Rspberry Pi $35.00, an I2S DAC based on ESS 9023 chip (my current low end favorite!) got that from HiFiMEDIY for $18.00 ($24.00 shipped), a 4 GB SD chip, $4.00, and a Trend Net wireless USD dongle $10.00. So for just shy of $75.00 I have a really sweet player.
You download the code. I am using Rune, there is another called Volumio, although I think I prefer Rune. Load it on the SD card. Connect the DAC add the SD and boot it up. Now go to your web browser and you can find it there and you will be presented with the built in web pages that allow you to control it.
I must say it sounds unbelievably good to these old ears!
Be happy to add more and/or answer questions.
