Original JEM contained a Black leafed pheno.
Infrequent.
Coal black.
JEM had distinct yellow leaves when she went over..
The Black started from the centre of the leaf..out.
Sometimes leaving a yellow rim around it.
The black yellow mix on the leaf gave a metallic copper sheen.
At ALF #3 Deep Chunk photoperiod was added...Deep Chunk up to then ..all the photos I saw..and the pollen donation were White.
Something in this cross magnified the Black leaf trait out...

..(I'll come back to that point later.)..and I was as Surprised as anyone else to see my first Black Auto.
One of the other breeder over at ICmag at the time...was gifted the same DC genetics...and he got the blackest photoperiod I'd seen...so..hedging a guess it was the DC prompting it...

...
The first Clue I got was...I thought the middle of my leaf was showing a deficiency..it was looking light green in the middles..but it was the black colour...coming in from the tips of the leaves... moving towards the centre.
The ALF#4 Black Dragon black is what I call botanical black..think roses..tulips..the deepest purple is classed as black.
So definition of the black leafed trait up to ALF4 is very easy to define.
Coal black leaf from the middle out..under cover metallic copper. JEM dominant.
Deep purple black..moving in from the outside of the leaf in..Black Dragon dominant.
Simple ...huh...?..
