Really this is dependent on your own garden. If you’re having really quick rates of growth and the timing is right, then it’s possible to get good results.

Personally we don’t top any, just go with leaf tucking and LST on all our strains where appropriate,

But others have, will, and can make anything work,

I just for sure (again, personally) wouldn’t top any of the super quick, super indica strains like sour crack, strawberry nuggets , 24 carat for example,

Excellent results obtained from topped, mainlined, as many have shown at AFN, on a daily basis ..... Good smoke and good yields for sure .....

Personally, just me not a .edu Study and for sure no Degree in bio-whatever or Degree in ANYTHING but .....

MY Personal Preference is to have everything as natural as possible using my .....

You will find certain strains do better not ttopped.VERYINDICA leaning plants can have negative effects from topping and timing is very important. Some can do well, but add a little more time. But I agree with Mitch, I don't top many Autos... especially first run.

I just ran a Sour Stomper in a mixed strain Perpetual Grow. I admit the yield wasn't great at 96 grams, but it was really fast at 69 days. It also doesn't require much space width wise (not much wider than my pot). For me it works out kind of nice to have a skinny girl growing next to a fat round one. Makes the best use of my space. I'm sure I'm not the only guy to think "I can shoe horn one of those in between....".
SS is currently my fav smoke.
I like growing all them girls, all different sizes, shapes, and flavors.
