Indoor Trying for efficiency: Dutch Passion Auto Lemon Kix

Right, quick update a little sooner than planned, but I wanted to show off a few things.

So as edited into the other post earlier, the clips seem to work so far. I have a bunch of improvements planned for them, some time later when I get to it so probably never, but for now they do the job and will stay on another 1-3 days to make sure the bent branches stay bent, but not so long as to restrict any growth. They move easy enough until they don't, to gauge how fat the stems have swelled and the clips need to be removed, or replaced with bigger ones if necessary.

Thanks to them, I was able to lower the lamps down to (in some places) no more than 10cm/4in (!) above the extremely even canopy, angled to keep it between 10-15cm on average, lower tops excluded of course. I'm expecting noticeable improvements in yield/efficiency here, but will probably have to go back to 15-20cm in the long run to not burn any bud once more fully formed.

I could have put in another net instead, sure, it's actually even in the pictures already - but that would make schwazzing her again a complete nightmare, so I won't do that to myself. That's why clips. Then the final (hopefully) 2-3 schwazzes will at least be doable without going completely insane.

Quick side note to new growers, DO NOT DO THIS, with most modern lamps and setups for 60x60 this would be way too close, manufacturers recommend roughly twice that distance, or more. But I'm comfortable doing dumb shit because I've seen the possible consequences and early warning signs often enough to know (mostly kinda) what I'm doing. The big ass fans help as well, and the modified fans inside the lamps that keep them cool and reasonably quiet. Also never modify your lamps, it's 230/110V in there, you might kill yourself for nothing. Just buy good lamps, they're all extremely cheap these days anyway. Used to spend more on a quality lamp reflector (with no lamp, or ballast, or cooling, or...) than a full high quality LED lamp costs these days.

Then as a reference for the discussion about under canopy lighting, I present "Shitty but bendable Amazon lights shoved directly under the plant to build the closest possible UCL with the lowest energy usage while being maybe hopefully highly efficient - in D Minor" or something.

And finally, I'd like to coin the phrase "tumbleweed" for this style of grow if nobody else has yet :D You might see why. I know 420AF's method originally does not include removing the lower leaves/branches in the middle, but for my small 60x60/2x2 tent and my grow room size, temps, RH etc., that is not an option unless I want to yield mostly mold.

Wish I could just skip ahead 2 or even 4 weeks and see what she looks like then... but I have my suspicions :pop:
How does she look now?

Sorry to make you wait mate, I'll leave you to judge ;) She's not quite as thick as I'd like her to be yet, then again, she still has some weeks to go... I'm rather confident I made the right decision when I bought a bud trimmer a few weeks ago :smokeit:

I was just posting all the pics, then I remembered there was the "A" plant still as well when I last posted (day 72 - I took her down on 83), so let me get her out of the way first - dear Arnie, whom I've been smoking on for a few weeks now:

I could easily have left her for another week or so, maybe more - but I was running out of weed and just didn't feel like waiting anymore. She didn't seem like she was gaining weight anyway the last couple of days, but yeah, it's definitely debatable.

However, I was a bit stunned when I found that after drying, she was carrying a full 69g on her. That was a LOT more than I was expecting at first, and still quite a bit more than I was expecting at harvest. But I must admit, it's possible it was still slightly wet on the inside, despite the outside seeming entirely dry.

But it got hard to make any more exact measurements after I had been smoking it, having some of it in bags and some drying again to make sure it really was fully done. I'd say realistically it was probably 5-10g less, but not much more than that - I've been smoking her for over two weeks, mainly in the bong, but also rolled a few blunts, a bunch of joints, and I still have about 15g or so left. So no exact measurement here, but I'm more than happy with what little Arnie lifted. Proud daddy right here.

And damn, the Lemon Kix definitely deserves its name. I know it was once called Zkittlez but the Kix is true too. Very nice, flavorful, citrus-sy weed that kix you right in the head, in an active, happy and positive way. Exactly what I was looking for this time around. But I also realized I definitely need an Indica to chill out at night... let's hope the best for my remaining Forbidden Cherry.

---

Now just one more pic from my ever so professional grow and schwazzing setup, to get that out of the way before we get to the main event - Biggie:

Simple setups do the trick just fine. But I must admit, I'm working on some improvements for the next run, to save my back and time.

Day 78, after another (more or less full - where I can get to anyway) schwazzing, though I heard people argue about the exact definition of that a lot, so I'll just call it "generous removal of fan leaves":

Getting mighty electro-funky up in here. I saw people like under canopy lighting. I raise you in canopy lighting. Can't you hear the euro techno coming from that plant???

I don't know, I don't care, I'm trying this. Stay tuned for results ;)

Sorry for the multiple posts but the picture limit keeps kicking my butt... at 4 pictures every other day, 15 pictures don't last long...

Day 102, bit of drama: runoff was basically poison, EC sky-high, flushed the whole tank twice and for two hours, then dramatically lowered feed:

Day 104, plant reacting very very well to lower feed, even though it also just survived a whole night (days 102-103) at about 35-41°C in the tent while I slept due to the "smart" (my ass) fan controllers dying and thus the 2x200mm fans not running:

And there we are, that's what she looked like this morning. I'm considering lowering the 2nd net down on her, but that'd of course completely eliminate any future chances of cutting, moving or fixing anything in there.

She seems to be getting heavy, and I'm getting impatient, but I want to see this one through to the "real" end and see how much I can pull off her. On that note, none of the pictures ever show the whole plant - more like 1/2 to 3/4, depending, the rest of the buds are hidden behind bigger ones in front...

So hey, so far my personal takeaway would be: the 420autoflower method does indeed seem to work with DWC as well, just fine really, but you might want to look into feeding your plants better (I overdosed her for most of the time - EC 1.6 is more than enough, and a 3/4 dose of P/K and Hesi Boost) and getting better under canopy lighting. Personally, I'm a fan of using what I have, thus DWC, thus those lights, and well, judge for yourself.

Oh and sure, a bigger tent would be useful - but I got my fixed space and fixed tents and I'll stick with both. It's a 60x60 (2x2) again, just for anyone who didn't read the first posts in the thread.

Alright, more to come later on - hopefully sooner this time but I can't make any promises yet, life is crazy.

I'm pretty happy so far and can't wait to see the final yield... I'm currently guesstimating with another 2-4 weeks, we'll see.
And ideas, input, hints and kisses welcome. But I think we're kinda doing alright :jump:

...except for the few white patches of course, where I bleached the bud by having the lights to close. They were unfortunately already at max height, so I had to change the way they're hung and hung them higher, problem solved.

Oh hey and a giant heart-felt THANK YOU to 420autoflower, the man himself. Your method sure requires a lot of patience, work and oversight... but damn, it's a whole leap in plant performance, night and day difference from what I'm guessing the final weight will be. Normally I grow maybe 100-150g (4-6 oz) in a 60x60... this however... well damn, we'll see :D
