Indoor low budget stealth grow. Espoma organic potting soil, GH Grow & Bloom, Bloom only now. Feed GH Bloom, BS Molasses, ingoing water ph 6.5, outgoing water ph 5.0 Is this normal? I'm thinking outgoing water is lower ph b/c all the nutes have been absorbed by the soil?

Hi there Iheartmj,

Getting the soil PH right can be a confusing thing to get your head around at first. I've got this post written by GoAuto bookmarked which explains things in the most simple way. Have a look at this :)

Rough Calculation Guide by Goauto:

Here's some good info on ph.....
If your runoff pH is higher than your starting pH, use this equation to determine your soil pH:*
Soil pH = Runoff pH + Difference

If your runoff pH is lower than your starting pH, us this equation:
Soil pH = Runoff pH - Difference.

For example, say your the starting pH of your solution before it goes in is 6.5 and the pH of your runoff is 7.0. The difference is +0.5, so using the above equation:
Soil pH = 7.0 + 0.5*
Soil pH = 7.5

If your starting pH is 6.5 and your runoff is 6.0, your difference is -0.5 and using the above equation:
Soil pH = 6.0 - 0.5
Soil pH = 5.5

So your soil PH looks about 3.5 (5 - 1.5 = 3.5) which is wayyy too low to grow. Ideally you need to get it back up to somewhere around the 6.2 - 6.5 range. This could be done by flushing it with a higher PH'd water.

If you can water in at 7 and get it coming out at 6.7 - you should be getting pretty close.

When feeding, make sure you test your PH AFTER putting the feed in with the water - I know molasses can really affect the PH.

Hope this helps a little.

Hey Blue. Only growing for a little while now. Plant was looking a little rough so instead of giving her more nutes I decided to get a PH meter and try to figure out the whole PH thing that I have been avoiding.
Well I found out that my water going in was at 7 and water coming out was 8.1. Sooooo i went to the store and got some floroclean and some PH up and PH down.
I mixed the floroclean 5ml to 1 gal. Phed the salution to 6.5 I flushed it with the whole 1gal. let it set for 1hour then I flushed with another gal. of just water PHed at 6.5
The drain water was 7.4, its coming down, but my ? to you is, do I keep flushing using this method until I get the soil down or do I just water at normal intervals with the PH corrected water?
Thanks Blue.
Looking at your threads, you are one crazy auto grower with a wealth of knowledge.

How old is the grow? I had similar PH problems (6.8 in and 5.3 out), in the end I poked holes in the top and filled with about a tablespoon of garden lime, and whilst this was working I up'd the PH of the water to around 7.5 - takes a couple of weeks for the lime to work, so if your near the end probably just as easy to up the PH of the water.

on its 6th week
growing in 3gl. felt pot with happy frog and 25% perlite
I have very good run off and the pot does not sit in the run off it gets drained into a catch jar

I'd wait till she drys for a few, then flush with water PH'd at 5 you want one gallon of water for every gallon of the pot size.... Then give it a half gallon of 1/4 strength nutrients.

goAuto6- Should I use floroclean when I do this?
