LOL, I finally was able to visualize what you were trying to tell me. The "put your hand OVER the light" part is what threw me for some reason. Maybe I was high?There is a simple foolproof thing to do.
The light cutoff point is fairly abrupt, so if you raise your hand over the light where you want to put a plant, then lower your hand till you see full brightness on it. Thats your outside coverage limit. Then raise or lower as necessary to adjust to that spot you want it at. In a perfect world that would place the light at a healthy distance from the tops but not too far either.
