PHOENIX (CBS5) -The Arizona Department of Health Services has released its latest annual Medical Marijuana Report.
According to data, the number of active cardholders during the 2013-14 fiscal year is up about 15,000 from the prior year."The patient card gives me my medicine that will keep me mobile," said Shanda Porter, of Phoenix. "I'm able to walk, carry things and keep a good quality of life."
The 63-year-old woman is one of more than 52,000 medical marijuana cardholders in Arizona.
According to the report, that number includes 51,783 patients and 591 caregivers.
Most patients had one debilitating medical condition and most were being treated for severe and chronic pain.
"I did a lot of bowling and it hurt the one knee," Porter said.
According to the report, 615 doctors provided patients with certifications for medical marijuana cards.
Twenty-five of those doctors certified 60 percent of all patients.
Of those 25 doctors, 21 were naturopathic physicians – like the one who saw Porter for her chronic knee pain.
"As long as they're doing what's required of them, that they're doing all of the requirements such as the physical examination, the reviewing of 12 months of medical records, insuring that they have a debilitating medical condition, and also checking the pharmacy database as just examples - then we have no cause to believe that they're doing anything incorrectly," said Don Herrington, assistant director for Public Health Preparedness with AZDHS.
Herrington said in the three years since the medical marijuana program began in Arizona, only 30 doctors have been reported to various state medical boards for possible violations.
