I am seeing allot of COB lights is this the future of led grow lights?

My money is on no.

saying that most LEDs are chip on board but I don't think the Sol and Helios style are the future.

So Tang all it is is fancy wording COB. Seeing that a majority of led's are chip on board I am glad I asked learn something new every day

I think technically most are,like the modules on my GNs there chips mounted on boards but the term has recently been coined by this type of module where lots of small chips are packed in together.

The COB name for led grow lights is really because of the different methods of focusing the beams as technology moves on.

Originally most panels had just the lenses over the bulbs, then some had reflector cones/squares fitted as well as lenses to each bulb and yet others had multiple chips focused in the same method as a true COB is.

As TaNg's pic shows, what is sold as a cob is not a cob technically because it has more than one bulb but since it looks like a cob I suppose the name has stuck.

Originally what is now termed "COB" (Circuit On Board) LED, were refered to as an "Intergrated array " which is made up of a matrix of SMD' (Surface Mounted Diodes) on a single "Chip" module.

It is now more popular to have reflectors as it is cheaper than using columnar refocusing lenses.

The Budzilla was one of the first Intergrated LED to be sold in the UK by "Greenlights" now called "Budmaster" and were manufactured by "Vanq".

These Are no longer sold by "Budmaster/greenlights" as their lights now come from "Evergrow" and use more traditional diodes with refocusing lenses.

"COB" is an easier more user friendly term to use than "intergrated" LED as it rolls of the tongue easier and your not left trying to explain what an intergrated array is.

Now we see them every where, after all they are so simple to manufacture , you can also get some fairly cheap diy kits consisting of a power supply/driver, "Cob" chip,heat sink & a fan.

Not so long ago making your own LED grow light was only possible if you knew what you were doing and had electronics experience.

I not long ago invested in a Cob light got it straight from china, was going to go with the helios pro 9 but the budget just didn't run to it so instead went for 1 of these



I'm currently 26 days into my first grow with it and the and the light seems to be rocking, one of the Royal Queen Northern Lights is threatening to be be a bit of a beast



This light got these girls rooted and growing quicker than I've ever managed under Hps, so up to now I'm well impressed this Cob unit ( and this is a cheapish 1 !!! ) really looking forward to seeing how well this unit flowers.

I am seeing that exact same light on ebay a 1200 watt went for 439.00 canadian
