I am seeing allot of COB lights is this the future of led grow lights?

My money is on no.

saying that most LEDs are chip on board but I don't think the Sol and Helios style are the future.

it's a cob with chips on board
powering a plant

:)
What's a cob?

edit: a cob!

So Tang all it is is fancy wording COB. Seeing that a majority of led's are chip on board I am glad I asked learn something new every day

I think technically most are, like the modules on my GNs there chips mounted on boards but the term has recently been coined by this type of module where lots of small chips are packed in together.

The COB name for led grow lights is really because of the different methods of focusing the beams as technology moves on.

Originally most panels had just the lenses over the bulbs, then some had reflector cones/squares fitted as well as lenses to each bulb and yet others had multiple chips focused in the same method as a true COB is.

As TaNg's pic shows, what is sold as a cob is not a cob technically because it has more than one bulb but since it looks like a cob I suppose the name has stuck.

Originally what is now termed "COB" (Circuit On Board) LED, were refered to as an "Intergrated array " which is made up of a matrix of SMD' (Surface Mounted Diodes) on a single "Chip" module.

It is now more popular to have reflectors as it is cheaper than using columnar refocusing lenses.

The Budzilla was one of the first Intergrated LED to be sold in the UK by "Greenlights" now called "Budmaster" and were manufactured by "Vanq".

These Are no longer sold by "Budmaster/greenlights" as their lights now come from "Evergrow" and use more traditional diodes with refocusing lenses.

"COB" is an easier more user friendly term to use than "intergrated" LED as it rolls of the tongue easier and your not left trying to explain what an intergrated array is.

Now we see them every where, after all they are so simple to manufacture , you can also get some fairly cheap diy kits consisting of a power supply/driver, "Cob" chip, heat sink & a fan.

Not so long ago making your own LED grow light was only possible if you knew what you were doing and had electronics experience.

Here is the "Budzilla" from 2012 -

Integrated LED Grow Lights Are Here

Integrated led grow lights really are the next evolution in led grow light technology changing hydroponic growing completely giving an unsurpassed coverage and increased durability and reliability never before seen in any led grow light.

Unique Blending of Light

(PRWEB UK) 23 October 2012
Integrated led grow lights bring many advantages to the grower including a dramatic increase in reliability and stability and now thanks to Greenlights LED it is available to the masses.
Integrated led’s are basically a bunch of smaller led’s all placed together in a grid with each square having its own colour. This of course creates one large super powered led that kicks out a lot of light.
Unique Blending of Light
Integrated led’s give an unique blending of light that has never seen before in any led grow light, this unique blending of the colours helps to ensure maximum distribution of all the required colours in the grow area. This unique blending of course helps to imitate nature more effectively which can only be a good thing.
Manageable Size and Weight
Budzilla is small and compact measuring 28.3cm x 28.3cm x 8.5cm and weighing only 4.6kg. Weight for weight these lights are 300% lighter than other lights of the same power and footprint.
Unlike all other led grow lights Budzilla do not grow in size to become more powerful, rather the led’s are just larger and higher powered while the unit size remains the same.
This is great news for the grower who would previously be struggling to hang a light that weighs 15 – 20kg, no more bent tent bars and no more need to for additional support for tent bars.
90 Degree XL Lens
The Budzilla double lens is the most efficient and effective double lens on the market today giving an unsurpassed footprint while penetrating deeper than any lens has ever gone before.
Elegant Simple Construction
Unlike traditional led grow lights Budzilla has no PCB (printed circuit boards) instead the diodes are fixed directly to the massive heat-sinks with the positive and negative wires going directly to the diode.
So this breaks down to a very simple and elegant construction that provides greater durability and reliability of the overall product.
Budzilla breaks down like this:
4 fans
4 power packs
4 heat sinks
4 diodes
This of course means less wiring in the unit, which of course increases overall performance and longevity.
Massive Heat-sinks
Of course these new high powered integrated led’s kick out a fair bit of heat as you would expect, but not to worryBudzilla has massive finned aluminium heat sinks that keep the units running at an average 20- 22 degrees.
Seed to Harvest Full Spectrum Ratio
Budzilla has a very effective full spectrum ratio that will grow your plants from seed to harvest.
Needless to say that integrated led can provide a more effective full spectrum ratio than traditional panel lights or cluster lights by allowing a more specific percentage based ratio of colours.

I not long ago invested in a Cob light got it straight from china, was going to go with the helios pro 9 but the budget just didn't run to it so instead went for 1 of these

I'm currently 26 days into my first grow with it and the and the light seems to be rocking, one of the Royal Queen Northern Lights is threatening to be be a bit of a beast

This light got these girls rooted and growing quicker than I've ever managed under Hps, so up to now I'm well impressed this Cob unit ( and this is a cheapish 1 !!! ) really looking forward to seeing how well this unit flowers.:peace:
