I'm wanting to make some cooking cannaoil for various desserts (one dessert will be baked, the other is a milkshake blend using oil and peanut butter), but have a question. I understand that for edibles the herb needs to be decarbed. I plan on making my oil in a slow cooker on low - which is about 200*F and simmering it for 8 hrs. Shouldn't this process already decarb the THCA? Many recipes I've seen say to decarb before making the oil, which seems redundant to me - if THCA is converted simply by adding heat, technically I should be decarbing while making the oil. Am I correct, or should I actually perform a decarb step before stating the oil infusion?

Hi, BK :) I run my oil (coconut usually, I've done olive oil once-same results) for 6 hrs in a small crock, on low. And, I always decarb my herb before adding it to the oil. I've had great results with putting the herb on a cookie sheet, oven at 200-250(max) for 30 minutes. The few brain cells in me that quote chemistry (they're in the back bar with the supposedly cannabis wounded ones...Ha!) say that the cannabinoids-THC/CBD, etc, once in the oil, are being bound chemically to the oil, and that must not allow for the same level of decarbing that the oven method provides. I know that I've made an oil run without decarbing, and it seemed significantly "weaker" than a decarbed run- same base material, too.
What kind of oil are you planning to use?
Enjoy!

Thanks for the info Waxi!! Guess I better make an extra step of decarbing separately. Glad to find someone else who uses a slow cooker. Should I plan on closer to 6 hours on low (instead of 8?) I'll be using vegetable oil. I haven't decided if I'm going to use my generic and simply called "vegetable oil" that I already have, or buy some Olive Oil specifically for cannabis infusion. (I'll prob go with the olive oil).

Anything over 6 hours is overkill, methinks, Brother :) My crock runs 190-195deg on Low, and I've not noticed any potency difference since using 6 hrs vs 8 :)
If you can get your hands on coconut oil, it is the best oil for infusion, imo. You can eat a spoon of it by itself, and its just good for your being :)
Glad to help, Dude!

At 200F it will take about 9 hours to decarb your bud. And unless you have a slow cooker with digital heat controls, there is NO temp control in a standard slow cooker. the difference between warm and high is only how long it takes to get to temp! Another way to cook oil is in a double boiler. you can, with practice get accurate control of the temps in the upper boiler. I use a candy thermometer to monitor my temps. I decarb on the oven then cook at 195F for 4 hours. Another thing is, if your using medium-low quality trim, you can strain the oil then cook another batch of trim in the same oil.

Thanks for the advise Pop! So what you're saying is that I can decarb in oil, it will just take longer to fully decarb that way?

About the temp on the slow cooker, yeah I agree. Perhaps I should have it on high for an hour to let it heat up and then turn it to low for another 8 to decarb? Or I could take 20 min and decarb in the oven 1st and then I don't have to leave it in the slow cooker for as long and just keep it on low. Am I on track here?

DAMN! That would make some potent ass oil I would imagine!

Yeah sweet man thanks again. My recipe for my baked dessert calls specifically for liquid vegetable oil, so I don't know if using a different type of vegetable oil would change the outcome of the dessert. It's a family recipe passed down and I don't really wanna mess up the flavor. But I might be throwing it out of whack adding weed to it anyways lol. IDK man is there a flavor difference between the different oils? Are some better to bake with than others? I'm not really much of a kitchen guy haha.

I always decarb 220 at 45 mins double wrapped in aluminum foil. I make coconut oils though some people are allergic to it, olive oil, veg oil, butter only use high fat unsalted kerry gold, and thc sugar. 220°F for 45 mins decarb is perfect

Just decarb first for 30 mins at 122 deg C, then infuse into coconut oil on a double boiler for an hour. Adding lecithin makes a big positive difference too.
