its not an addition, its a must IMO. My tap water is so shitty that I have to use RO water, thus, I have to ph every gallon I make.
starting with a cheap ph meter is ok, but plant to either tthrow it out every 6 months, or upgrade to a goos one, like the ExStik PH105, or a Blue Labs.
Cheap ph meters ruined a couple of my grows, I learned my lesson!!
The same for an ec or ppm meter. knowing the strength of your nutrient solution tell your more than just how much your feeding your plant. It can also be a diagnostic too when sued with a ppm meter.

Im not sure of your guys location but a ppm/ec meter is a great addition to your kit. You can get them quite cheap on ebay/amazon. I use canna coco and their process is quite specific. Usually they have directions on the side of the bottle as how to ph. Personally i would let the water sit 24 hrs then add the nutrients, let that sit several hours mixing it periodically then ph last.
