Can you migrate the whole thing over? Would we lose any features?

Short answer, yes, it's possible to migrate from Xenforo to Discourse. The majority of things should export/import just fine, including threads, messages, private messages, etc. I'm not 100% about moving the entire database over though (if we did commit to this, I'm going to likely gut years of content that nobody looks at, because it's being for bloat.)

Longer answer, certain features, like from our add-on's, will not transfer over.

That said, Discourse is open-source, public, and free (it's like they wanted it to be successful and supported by the community or something?!)

I'll have to research all the add-on's we currently have to see if there is something similar for Discourse.

I'm willing to bet the answer is "yes" to most of that, and probably fundamentally better than most of the crap we're running on here.

There is no urgent rush on this, other than feeling like the current software we use is starting to "dead end" in terms of being worth using or providing functionality.

For what we're paying for right now, we could have a full blown Lamborghini of a hosted solution with Discourse.

Right out of the box there's a integrated, Live Chat:

For Discourse live chat, the official, built-in Discourse Chat plugin provides native real-time text chat rooms and is bundled with Discourse, while the Chat Integration plugin connects Discourse to external platforms like Slack, Discord, or Teams for notifications, and the Livestream plugin adds live video/audio capabilities with chat. You can enable these plugins via your site settings to add both short-form (chat) and long-form (topic) communication to your community.

For @420Forever , that is.

Looking at some of plugins just briefly, allows for video uploads, there's a plugin to insert audio recordings right in the posts (versus having to upload an mp3 file,) etc.

This is already looking robust after 5 minutes of playing around.
