To me grits are basically a transporter for flavors. They don't add much to the dish but when mixed with different flavors they do a good job of mimicking it. My kids like honey and cinnamon in their grits while I prefer a more savory flavor.
You are a one of a kind Fairlynew because most people I have talked with up north just gives me a strange look when I say grits, lol. The strangest thing I noticed when I was in Ontario was gravy on french fries. I would order fries at a restaurant and that was the first thing they would ask, do you want gravy with them? Hell no, I don't want gravy on my french fries I always thought.
