A brilliant subject to put a word in. The belief of extra terrestrial life forms has been circulating the minds of humanity for thousands of years. I have two personal theories. Speculation and constructive critisism is welcome, but here they are, inna nutshell.
Theory 1.
Extra terrestrial life forms ARE real. We are merely an "experiment". Far superior life forms, not necaserily one with a respiratory system, (just because we breathe oxygen, doesnt mean they do) from another planet, used earth as an environment for testing the power of evolution, and after many thousands of years of observation, the undeniable fact that mankind has an unbelievable will to survive, led them to allow "life" to continue, but with very subtle and undetectable influences, such as technology.
I do NOT believe that aliens walk among us, undetected, or that they have power in higherarchy. They are merely, "playing god", giving us life and observing.
Theory 2.
"Aliens" are NOT real. They were merely the product of a very complex imagination and have been used since as a means of producing entertainment, and from that, merchandise wich has been used for many years as a way of "making money".
As the intelligence of the "common" man has improved dramatically in the past 100 years. More and more people have taken the old tales of "aliens" as a plausable theory, therefore many have dedicated thier lives to finding "evidence" of this, and have "played into the hands" of the government. Billions have been made from the concept of aliena for years and the apparent "leaks" of classified information are purely publicity stunts to keep the public interested in the idea of extra terrestrial life.

Depends on the definition of we I guess. We humans started out pretty equal with the rest of the food chain. Wouldn't it bruise our egos if ET showed up and started negotiating with Coral for mineral rights.

Well, even from very early on, early man had an edge over the rest of the food chain, even before the brain size explosion, in our ability / desire to use tools to make tools. This is an extremely important aspect of anthropology and biology. Making tools to make other tools, called secondary tools, and only humans do it. (there are a couple apes seen making secondary tools a few times but it was a rare thing, not species wide). Other animals do make use of tools, like to open nuts, coconuts, termite mounds, ect, but we made specialized knives to make better wooden hand tools or leather tools for example.
They sure have had an impact, good and bad. Who knows? I only chose coral because they are long term builders with structures millions of years old. We build a highway bridge, we figure 50 years is good.
