Stoners Mac and Cheese recipe..

Homemade macaroni and cheese is a beloved favorite in households across the country. So much so that there are now dozens of instant alternatives that allow you to get your comfort food fix in mere minutes – without the need for an oven.

But now a new foodie trend is offering an all-natural alternative to the popular, processed Easy Mac options, that give you the same deliciously cheesy results, in the same quick time frame, but without all the additives.

Indeed, a quick online search shows that there are a variety of tutorials on YouTube demonstrating how you can quickly make mac and cheese in your microwave - with some recipes only requiring macaroni, cheese, milk and an over-sized mug.

Olivia Ku, who shared a healthy version of microwavable macaroni and cheese on her YouTube channel LoveHealthOK.

And after learning that it is possible to make one of our favorite comfort foods in less than five minutes, the Femail team was only too happy to put the homemade 'instant' macaroni and cheese to the test.

During the work day, Femail editor Charlie Lankston and reporter Erica Tempesta swapped their usual take-out orders for a trip to the store where they picked up elbow macaroni, a bag of pre-packaged shredded, mild cheddar cheese and a carton of milk.

In the office kitchen they poured a cup of of dry macaroni into a microwavable safe mug and covered it with water before putting it in the microwave for two minutes.

Four ingredients, five minutes: Olivia Ku's mac and cheese

Step one: Charlie measured one cup of dry macaroni and poured it into a microwavable mug

Step two: Next, Erica poured enough water into the mug so the macaroni was covered

After the time was up, they stirred the macaroni and put it back in the microwave for another two minutes.

While Charlie noted that it is important to test the noodles throughout the process to ensure that they aren't being overcooked - which would result in mushy macaroni and cheese - Erica served as the official taste tester, and only burned the roof of her mouth a few times.

When the macaroni was completely cooked, they drained the left over liquid before adding approximately 1/4 a cup of milk and a 1/2 of cup of shredded cheddar.

They then gave the mixture a good stirring before putting it back in the microwave and heating it for another 30 seconds to melt the cheese into the milk and create a creamy sauce.

Step three: Charlie placed the mug in the microwave and set the cook time for two minutes

Step four: Charlie and Erica stopped the microwave every few minutes to stir the pasta before setting it for another two minutes

Step five: After the macaroni was fulled cooked, they drained the excess liquid and added 1/4 cup milk (left) and a 1/2 cup of shredded cheddar cheese (right) before zapping it in the microwave for another 30 seconds

Both Charlie and Erica were surprised by how easy it was to make the homemade macaroni and cheese recipe at the office, and while their version tasted pretty good, they agreed that the measurement of ingredients should be altered based on your taste preferences.

After tweaking the recipe a few times, the budding Femail food experts learned that the results were far more enjoyable when they added a lot more cheese and far less milk to their version.

During an in-office taste-testing most people noted that the recipe definitely needed a touch of salt and pepper.

Looking good: Charlie gave the macaroni one last stir to make sure the cheese was properly melted

Taste testing: Charlie and Erica both agreed the macaroni and cheese was good, but it definitely needed a touch of salt and pepper

Others thought the mild cheddar was too bland and suggested that we should try a sharper, more flavorful cheese.

But the simplicity of the recipe is undeniable, and creative cooks can experiment by adding spinach, bacon, tomatoes, ham or whatever their favorite toppings may be.

And while Charlie and Erica didn't compare the amount of calories and fat in the homemade recipes versus boxed versions, they both liked that the recipe lacked the artificial preservatives found in the instant macaroni and cheese that is made from powder mixes.

However, this is the last year that the original version of Kraft Mac & Cheese sold in the US will contain artificial preservatives or synthetic colors. Kraft announced in April that its macaroni and cheese will be colored using paprika, annatto and turmeric starting in January.

RECIPE FOR HOMEMADE MACARONI AND CHEESE IN THE MICROWAVE
Ingredients:

1 cup dry elbow macaroni

1/4 cup milk

1/2 cup shredded cheese

Instructions:

Pour one cup of dry elbow macaroni into a microwavable safe mug or bowl.

Cover the macaroni with water and put in the microwave for two minutes.

Take the macaroni out of the microwave and stir. Put the macaroni back in the microwave and cook for another two minutes, testing it every 30 seconds to make sure you are not overcooking the pasta.

When the macaroni is completely cooked, drain any excess liquid before adding the milk and cheese.

Stir well before placing the mug back in the microwave and cook for another 30 seconds until the cheese is completely melted.

Feel free to tweak the recipe to your liking and add additional ingredients such as spinach and crumbled bacon.

That`s a vicious rumour! It`s never been backed up by any `solid`:)eyebrows:,( I fink that`s quite clever (for UKers!)) evidence (well, not since i990-91, mostly!). Any way, even it was true... (I`m gonna be checkin` eps` bloody rumour mill thread later! Oh, and I`ll be asking a certain `alphabetic numerical Brother` about where info could possibly have come from?) Anyhoo, tbh honest...It`s true! Cannaboids (all 85 of `em!), are systemic in me (most times!). When they haven`t been, then life and general health/feeling of wellbeing, have suffered! So...Guilty and better for it! ;) :toke:
