So after months of trying to get my hands in Mephisto, a local South African seedbank brought in a few packs, at rather steep prices. I picked up a 3 pack of Gold Glue, 3 pack of 24ct and a 7 pack of Strawberry Nuggets.

However, my excitement has been muted by failed germinations. 6 of them to be precise.

I am currently trying to pop my last GG and 24ct seeds after the others didn't pop.

It's now been 72 hours using the recommended technique but this is what I have, the GG has shown some root and the 24ct is cracked, but no root yet from the 24ct and the GG root seems small for the amount of time it has had. One of the other failed germs did the same as the GG and then the root just never progressed. I'm worried this will do the same. The paper towels aren't excessively wet, but moist. They don't drip or anything... I opened up the one failed germ today to take a look at the inside, and it was mostly mushy - making me think it is a rot. But the towels aren't excessively wet. The only thing I could think of that could cause the rot would be the very high humidity within the ziplock, but since that's the recommended method, I feel like that can't be right...

Feedback appreciated.

I’m wondering about your water?

Thanks for the response, water was my immediate concern as well. But I've tried both RO water from a dehumidifier and tap water. I threw some bag seeds in to test, using the same water and they popped. Super confusing :/

did the Strawbs pop mate?

the only trouble i've had so far with popping anything Mephisto is when they've sent me some older back catalogue strains as freebies - these are older strains from over two years ago and whilst it sucked they didn't go pop for me, i was appreciative of the chance to grow a couple of their older strains from before "my time" :pass:

as 24 Carat and Gold Glue are now older strains it's possible the seed bank had some old stock? perhaps if you can only get via this seed bank, select the newer releases to ensure fresher seeds?

i know it shouldn't matter so much and GG really isn't so old...but you don't know how well these seeds are stored...
the only Mephisto beans i've not had almost growing out of the packet are older freebies. 8 strains bought fresh from the catalogue have all popped for me with no exceptions and i'm not the most scientific when it comes to germing...

I am by no means an expert, but from what you are telling us, if the process was the same for all seeds and only the SN germinated, then I would suspect old stock (or not handled very well). I know we can be critical when someone complains about not having great germination rates, but in some cases, it can be the seeds. In my own opinion, very rarely would I suspect the seeds have bad germination rates when leaving Mephisto as they are tested and retested. Not saying it can't or doesn't happen, but very rarely. It is usually a case of poor handling or old stock. Lastly, don't give up on those seeds right away as I have read from multiple forum members having a seed pop long after they had given up hope of it germinating. Sorry to hear of your bad luck, but at least you have some Mephisto goodness going with the SN, and that is very good meds!

Try putting those seeds into the soil and giving them about 10 days to see if anything happens.

Other than that it might be old beans as people have said.

The technique I've used is 24 hours in little glass of water and then straight into the dirt after that, have had great 100% germ rate with seeds that are a few years old that way.

I agree. I know Mephisto germ method is used by many. However, a 24 hr soak and directly planting is better IMO. Most important is consistent temps. 80-85F. Plant seeds after soaking and cover with a clear cup. Paper towels can snuff out your seed. Too wet and no oxygen. Use a little Mycos in your Coco/Soil and you will have better results. Good luck
