New Grower Northen Lights Auto, UK Outdoor Grow, 1st Ever Grow Attempt

Just to add to your info overload, things I have learnt myself and through various forums regarding autos.

1)NL is a good strain stealth wise as it does not smell as much as other strains.

2)Germ seed in the final pot, tails down, I recommend 4L and above pot sizes for a reasonable yield, 1 Oz dry + typically expected.

3)Avoid overwatering, try and get onto the wet dry cycle asap, if you do not know what the wet/dry cycle is find out fast. (essentially you need to water the entire pot and let it dry out again to a depth of 3-4 cms, then you can water again, this can be tricky with a big pot and tiny seedling but I water the entire pot, fully dowsed but not saturated fully, you need to make sensible judgements about how much a seedling can take) Do not be tempted to keep watering every day you must let the soil dry out again. Overwatering is an extremely common noob mistake.

4)If at all possible take the pots indoors at night for the first 15 days or so before the smell starts, low temps (below 20C) will stunt the root growth and the plant will stay very small.

5) Your seedling is likely to stretch a fair bit starting at this time of year, it wil be stretching for light on a windowsill. Consider what you might do if it stretches up and becomes weak enough to look like it might topple. You may need to build the soil up and/or stake it with a lightweight drinking straw and light garden twine. It is a very fine balance with a seedling you need a little breeze to strenghten it but not break it in wind. Seedling stage is the most treacherous.

6)As a general rule make sure you do not let the seedling drop below 20C otheriwse it will stunt development of rootsand yield will be miniscule.

7) You probably will not have to use any feed for 20 days ! Then try and use organic fertilizers, not chemical fertilzers. Organic fertilzers leave more leeway for mistakes. Auto flowering strains tend to need very little fertilzer. The first feed at around 21-25 days should be rich in nitrogen so I suggest an organic tomato feed available online for less than £10.00 typically. Then either get a bottle of Biobizz Bloom or Plant Magic Bloom Old Timer, both organic canna specific bloom nutes. Always consider your safety buying online, who are you giving your money to and will they then know what you are growing. I prefer to do a walking vist to a grow shop even thought it is miles from my house. I do not appear with a car and reg plate and I go early in the morning as a first customer. Keeping my eye out on cars and who is in them etc. near grow shops. I walk past first and check the place out. Call me para. I visit grow shops as little as poss and thats why I use tomato organic feed in veg as that is not suspicious to purchase.

8)Buy measuring spoons on ebay 1ml is very small, about the amount that will fit on the top of a £2 coin. 1mL per litre is fine at first from around day 30 onwards added to your watering with every watering. Auto flowering strains will not need much and you compost already has enough nutes for at least 3 weeks.(normally)

I really do recommend organic nutes and not Tomorite which is chemical and very strong concentration. If you get chemical ferts wrong you can burn and kill a plant. Organic is a bit more forgiving as you feed the soil nd the bacteria and fungi in the soil naturally break down the organic feed into nutrients the roots can absorb (it takes 2-5 days in the soil from the time you feed). Chemical fert is readily available and is absorbed quick but if it is too strong it can burn the flower quick and from then on it will be hard to make a good recovery.

Remember Cannabis is a weed, it is quite hardy and one of the fastest developing plants on the planet, it mainly needs plenty of light, make sure you do not over water and support it's stem if/when need arises till it strengthens. Use common sense and you will be ok.

It's a lot to take in but it should be fun ! Before you know it you will be an old hand. Sweet Seeds Fast Bud #2 is a good strain in the UK from my experience trying it last year in spring. It did well considering an early start. Decent buzz and potency and hardy. Decent pest resiliience as well i.e. bud rot which can occur late in the growth with very dense buds (normally Indica dominant strains can suffer this) It is also done in about 7-8 weeks so if something goes wrong with grow 1 start again and get another grow in before the cold days start in Autumn. To clarify you could start a Fast Bud#2 grow in Mid July and still have a nice harvest come 2nd week September. So if it goes wrong this first grow don't worry.

Get some Sweet Seeds Fast Bud#2 seeds in and you will be good to start again as late as 15th July. Nay bother. "pher Wiggle"

Good luck.

What brand are your NL autos? I started germinating a Sensi Seeds on Wednesday. It has already sprouted (took about 60 hours in soil + 21 hours of germination). However I'm also growing an Afghan Kush Ryder which germinated a few hours slower and for all I know hasn't still sprouted.

I'm also freaking out every step of the way. I planted the seeds in a hole that was too big (poked it with my finger and made it 2,5 cm deep) AND I thought I drowned the poor bastards by pouring water over them afterwards. If that isn't bad enough I took a pair of tweezers and tried to remove some of the soil on the seeds and I ended up exposing the AKR seed temporarily. The NL seems to be doing fine but I don't know about the AKR since I'm out of town for the week.

Good luck with yours!

Hello Early Girl,im only 50 minutes north of you in the UK.
Just dropped by to wish you good luck with your grow, you seem to be getting plenty of good advice.
I will only stress about not overwatering or overfeeding. It is very easy to stunt seedlings by overfeeding.
Congrats on your new babies popping and hope they have a good summer up here.It will make a nice change.
Good luck EG.

One generally important thing I forget and you only get one chance at it so it is vitally important.
Tell no one that your are growing Cannabis. No-one, ever.

Anyone for whom it is not absolutely critical to know (i.e. your partner or other trustable person with whom you live) should not know. That is the second biggest risk to being caught next to smell.

Seconded.
Not easy because you'll be thinking about it loads. But people blab, they just can't help it.

Easier than being busted, having a criminal record and having your house turned upside down. Take the stealth and security of your grow very seriously and remember there is a 7 years max prison sentence in the UK form growing ganja. (rarely enforced but worth remembering) Tell others at your peril.

Hi Early Girl,

I have just come across your post. Interested to see how it turns out. I wish you the best of luck, just make sure you study symptoms thoroughly before jumping to conclusions of feeding, flushing or watering. I am a first timer, and just made the mistake of thinking its nute burn, but in fact it needed to be fed. Now I am left with a yellow plant....NOT GREEN lol.

Update us with pictures and have a look at my page too, i don't know how to link my grow journal as a signature but its Green House seed company big bang.

Good luck and happy harvesting :-)

Thanks Chancy, I am following you too :)

Max - Thanks for all the info. I have had a quick look, but will studie it a bit more when I have more time. There are a few things in there I haven't considered b4. Like the leaning!. Good to know there is a back up as well :tiphat:

Wienerwoods - I have sensi also. 3 days to germ and 3 days to pop out of the earth. Glad some one feels like me lol. Good luck 2u2

Rob - Good luck to you. North of me! Hope you dont get too cold this summer lol :)

zain - I have had a sneek peek at your page. I will have a proper look, when it isn't a Thrones night lol. Point taken about going too far the other way with nutes. Thanks

Max/ Mark - No one know's about the plants atm. I have no intention of telling, I dont drink so I can keep stum. One good reason to talk about the grow here is not bursting to tell ppl.

I had a look at the penaltys and the UK law advice RE growing before I started. But obv getting busted would be the worst !

You got me thinking (not for the first time) about the smell. How bad is it going to get ? and any tips ? I am mostly thinking lots of smelly plants around them to cover the smell up a bit. This is defo the biggest risk and its what has always put me off trying before now.

How bad will three (max) NLA plants smell ? and for how long will they smell strongly ?

I think I might go gorilla with one of them just to hedge my bets a bit

Smell is my new thing to obsess over

Really appricate all the responces today thanks everyone :Sharing One:

I've heard that Northern Lights strains (autoflowering ones as well) are among the most neutral smelling strains. I wouldn't worry too much especially outdoors but you might still wanna get something like an ONA block/gel handy if there are many people hanging out nearby. Just don't place it too close to the plant or it'll ruin the flavor.

I just moved my grow journal here if you wanna occasionally compare our progress or anything.
